think its just a way people try and explain how wide the saddle is as a lot more sold over internet these days. I was always told to measure by your fist but have found a wide in some makes of saddle are a medium in others. Best to send a template to the saddler or have them fitted.

I recently sold a saddle and several people asked me this question. The D to D measure was obviously wider than the saddle, so of no use whatsoever.
Instead, I measure the pommel at the widest point, above the start of the panel, vertically from the centre of the saddle down to the point above, and the distance between the panels at the very top of them.
The lady who bought the saddle was able to make a template from these measurements, and I'm pleased to say, the saddle fits her horse, and only requires a minor amount of flocking to fit.
D to D is a stupid measurement, and I think some of the people who ask for this are perhaps not as experienced as they may think.
