My friend has a seven year old grey Shire mare which suffers badly every year from sweet-itch. At least, she did three years ago, and then they bought her a huge Boett rug which is specially designed to keep the midges off and it seemed to work well for the past two years.
However, it would be great if she didn't have to wear the rug all summer and I wondered if anyone out there knew of a good prevention and/or cure - there must be something on the market which does the trick by now.
I read somewhere that Frontline is good for feather mites - has anyone tried this for sweet-itch? Some years ago I used Nuvan-top, (similar to Frontline) on a mare's itchy tail and that did the trick. I've also heard that there may be a vaccine out now ....... ?
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
PS They've tried all the usual older products and added garlic to the feed, without success.

Yes frontline does help with sweet itch, it is not licienced for horses , start spraying now.It kills the midges before they bite.

I've never heard of using Frontline before, is it just the one designed for dogs or cats or is there one for large animals? - how often do you use it, ie, daily, weekly?

mmm, the jabs can lead to laminitis aswell. I looked into it for one of ours and decided against it in the end. Dont think the results are that good either, its not a very high percentage that stop scratching aft6er the jabs

Couple of years ago we had the jabs for a mare with sweet itch - cost about £250 and they were imported by our vet from USA. Whilst they did slightly alleviate the itching they were in no way a cure and to be honest no better than putting her out in a boett rug and managing the problem ourselves so I wouldnt recommend them. Another problem is you have to inject the horse yourself so if you are not confident doing that its a problem!
