Gosh, Ive gone legit ..
Can anyone clarify please whether I am reading this correctly as, pretty sure that I am, I'm so surprised I'm thinking I'm wrong -
Looking at the rule book it states that an open intermediate WH upto 153cm is still classed as a novice in respect to novice 153cm classes? So it could win every open intermediate going then do the novice 153cm too. Is that right and If so where is the sense in that?
On the same subject of workers fence heights and spreads are now a good foot smaller than they were when I (not then the bravest over fences), used to do workers and definitely a change for the better IMO but again, I'm non plussed to see there's now no difference between open and novice classes in respect to max fence height/width.
Considering the 15hh worker courses back then, just at local BSPS level, were bigger then than even the current Desert Orchid maximums allowed doesn't half make me wish I'd been born twenty years later than I was and so competing now.
Anyway, any clarification from current BSPS workers people would be most appreciated , if any around ..

Not sure what the actual fence heights were when you did them, but I remember watching many worker classes at county level in the 1980's and the 13 handers certainly weren't jumping 4 foot courses !! Our "local" BSPS courses were big - as they are now -BUT nowhere near as big as today's Desert Orchid ones!! You were lucky to get half the jumps with fillers/greenery ....and water trays were few and far between. Pity that the "bounce" fences have gone from open tracks, but not always a safe fence I suppose.
You are correct about a pony between 148 cms and 153 cms being able to be an open intermediate yet still eligible for novice 153 (if it hasn't won 3 153 opens)....same as shp's and sp's/isrt's... but I can't actually think of one single pony that is.
I am not sure what you mean about no difference in novice and open fence height/widths. My rule book states a clear difference. Having watched many a round over the past few years, I feel most of the open tracks (especially the RIHS/Hoys/Champs courses) are big enough and very technical. Perhaps the maximum height allowed was greater some years ago, but I feel courses have become longer and more technical, and we see more up to height fences per course IMO. I am glad I wasn't a parent watching their child and pony jump round the Desert Orchid (or whatever the mid 80's equivalent was called)if it was a foot bigger than it is now....watching them go round the current track is heart stopping I can tell you!!!
I will look at the fences in my 1985 year book when I am home tonight and see if there are any pictures of ponies jumping these "puissance" courses!!
By the way, if you fancy a go round one of these easier courses, you can jump one of my ponies round!!! LOL!!!

I know that last year certainly that was the case. Intermediate and 15hh hand classes are seperate, sometimes different judges, different height fences, and so it doesnt matter how you do as an intermediate, it doesnt affect you as a 15hander. I think anyways....could be wrong, but thats what i have always understood x
