I've been using Net-tex Muddy Marvel this year - stays on for a week at a time so it's ideal for ponies living out.

What do people put on hairies feather in winter to prevent it disappearing in the mud? I found putting concrete underneath topped off by straw or shavings works a treat

Sadly, the reliance on judges looking at mane/feather/spats in the past few years has meant this is more of an issue than it ever was.
Come on everyone, Hairies can loose their feather if they want.........good ones often shed it in Springtime anyway.
Can we get back to breeding/jkeeping/udging ponies with good conformation rather than how much hair they have got?
It should not be the issue that it is!

With my Welsh con I find the best thing is never to touch the feather. That is to say never brush it. I dont wash muddy legs when they come in.For a show we just wash the legs and dry thoroughly. We have managed like this to avoid mud fever etc and keep the feather. Incidentally they are four white legs which I think are always more sensitive.

Fetherston, I agree totally. I don't brush tails at home. They are simply washed before a show.

I have for many years used liquid paraffin to combat mud fever and lose of feather. I 'paint' it on every morning with a smallish paint brush, I only wash legs if we are going to a show, the liquid paraffin can be bought in 3 litre bottles from your feed merchant, it is expensive, but a bottle will just about last the winter months, veg oil is as good and cheaper, I have used liquid paraffin for 30+ years and never had an animal with mud fever. Where I live it is very heavy clay and it is awful, very 'glue like' will pull a wellie off without any trouble, dries as hard as concrete in the summer!!
Make sure to buy LIQUID PARAFFIN, a lady on my yard used ordinary paraffin on her Sec C and the legs broke out in open sores!

I put Robinsons ' prevent it ' on ( think thay have changed the name now to leg salve or something ) it is Liquid Parafin and lanolin , bout £3.50 for big bottle and i have never had any mud fever trouble ..been using it for years ....the mud sort of slides off ! My friend has a trad col and puts pig oil with flowers of sulphur in it ...its what the Shire guys use to keep the feathers from ' burning off ' in the winter !

Gertrude - I wish that were true - I b------y work from home! Could it be any worse? The reason I'm posting like mad is that I am waiting for dressage times to be posted for the weekend and they are late putting them on and this is the only computer linked to the internet and I cant go into the house (I'm in converted stables) cos the cleaner is in there doing her last (if she but knew it) day and I cant keep looking at Horsequest as I find it all so depressing..... Roll on G and T time (is that about 4.30 pm do you think???)

Cornucrescine (however you spell it) makes hair grow but it is black and sticky other wise we use Vitamin E oil. Stick a pin in a capsule and rub the oil in. I also used that on scars on my own shoulder to quite good effect.

My very hairy traditional only goes out alternate days during the really bad weather, all I do is gently cold hose off the worst of the mud when she comes in. I dont brush or touch her feathers and she is on deep shavings, these dry her feathers out. Up to press I dont and havn't had a problem with mud fever with her ...touch wood
Our old pony though suffered last year and the vet told me Kamilison - think thats spelt right - for womens dry and cracked nipples - it was four pounds for a tube but cured it in one application - Marvellous

This is my first winter with a real hairy and I've been advised to spray his feather etc with pig oil which I've been doing once a week or as necessary, its brilliant!!. The mud just falls off when its dry leaving clean pony!!, and I've been using it on his mane and tail and I'm sure they've grown loads.
