I usually have the farrier out for an abscess in the hoof which cost me £10. Unfortantly the farrier couldnt make it so i thought i would give the vet a try. They charged me £60 for doing the same job !!!!!!!!! How can they justify that !

Presume that was £60 plus the callout plus VAT. I think that is very reasonable.

From what you both say, our vet does seem to be quite reasonable, but i think £10 is alot better!

The vets that come to our yard charges for the journey as well as the call out and consultation, so your talking £90 thats before any treatment:/

Yep it's £50 just for call out to us! It's worth getting a vet in case they need any drugs though.

I think vets have £ signs flashing in their eyes especially if the horse is insured.

Vets do work very hard, which i appreciate, but sometimes i think they are taking the micky regarding pricing. as this thread shows, there is no consistancy in what they charge around the country. Still think farriers are better for hoof abscess! ;D

I agree - farriers for abscesses, or lameness any day!!! Both on expertise and cost! I think vets rub their hands when you say you're insured, doing unnecessary procedures because it'll be paid for!

It costs a lot of money and takes a long time to qualify as a vet compared to a farrier. my vets offer a 24/7 365 service is costs a lot to provide that service as even if the vet does not get called out they still have to paid for being on call.
my farrier is not going be spending evenings or weekends waiting at home just in case a client needs him in an emergency.
a vets overheads are more they have to stock a big range of medicines which they have to buy in advance so that if a sick horse needs some medicine you can get it straight away and often have expensive mobile machines and diagnostic equiptment, they might need a surgery as well - farrier just needs a van and has less tools. Vets may go on expensive courses to keep up to date with changes in vet med.
I don't begrudge my vets a single penny as they are always going to be there if my pony has an emergency or is sick and i appreciate their knowledge - yes there are some vets who are money grabbing but mine are not like that i can even call them and have free telephone consultations if i am worried or don't know if they should come out or not.

Yes but vets charge ridiculous amounts for drugs - I used to work in pharmacy and know what these drugs cost for example a babyhaler from vet is around £60 from pharmacy with a prescription £15. They can be a bit naughty with their drug pricing IMO. Not quibbling cost per hour or call outs as I agree that 24/7 service costs. ETA My vets also do free telephone consultations and are very approachable about everything. I think alll vets should follow similar drug pricing structures though.
