will someone please explain why the entries for the Olympia qualifiers are poor if it is so good and why the entries for HOYS are so huge when you all slag off HOYS, and seem to love Olympia I don't think many people slag off HOYS - both finals are worth qualifying for, but the fact (a) up until next year, you have had to purchase a competition card, (b) there's only one judge for qualifying rounds, (c) you have to actually win the championship to qualify and (d) the time of year the final is held has probably put off a lot of people from giving Olympia qualifiers a go. I think getting rid of the card will probably encourage larger classes next year. I've only stewarded in HOYS qualifiers once but there were only 2 in the Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetland and New Forest/Connemara classes so I don't think the entries for those classes are always huge. I guess though that it is more difficult to win the HOYS qualifiers championship purely based on numbers forward, but if there is a reason for the classes having more entrants then I'm not sure if it is really relevant.

, even though it does not qualify you for anything, does no one agree that it is harder to win a HOYS qualifier championship than an Olympia Championship and will someone please explain why the entries for the Olympia qualifiers are poor if it is so good and why the entries for HOYS are so huge when you all slag off HOYS, and seem to love Olympia so much i am genuinely confused by it can you explain. To answer your questions, you are probably right - it seems at the moment it is easier to win an Olympia Championship than a HOYS championship (purely on numbers forward). However that does not mean it is easier to Win a Olympia Championship than a HOYS qualifier class! Therefore it is easier to qual for HOYS. No one is slagging HOYS off, the majority of people are saying they prefer Olympia! I will say one thing Grand Stand Media is a company striving for Profits, and has marketed the HOYS very well, lets not forget the influence of corporate strategies to entice us the consumers - this is something that perhaps the NPS has taken for granted (holding the trump card as the sole provider of an M&M final) now that they have competition from HOYS (and not being used to it) havent really reacted in a proactive way. I feel if NPS/Olympia marketed the product to the extent HOYS does they would see class numbers rise again. Lets face HOYS advertise in H&H nearly every week, send leaflets & letters etc etc .....one thing the NPS could do is use this thread and begin to reiterate what a prestigious event this is - and you have got to be in it to win it! I think olympia is an institution in itself, and will always be the penultimate original M&M Final of the Year, long may it reign!

Thankyou for explaining as i say i am new to this, may sound silly to you but would the NPS not be able to combine the HOYS and Olympia qualifiers ie winner of each class qualifies HOYS winner of Championship qualifies Olympia obviously enrty fees would be more expensive but look at all the money saved on diesel and the ponies would not have as many shows to fit in and NPS would have huge entries, problem solved? I realise 4 year olds cannot compete at Olympia so they would just pay the HOYS entry i also realise there are only 20 qualifiers not 35 perhaps the breed shows could make up the diffrence in nos. Only a suggestion what do you all think

Guestless, the year you are talking about when you Stewared a HOYS was the foot and Mouth year and the show was held at Rowallan. This not the norm their are HUGE classes for these "tickets"-- Take Cheshire in 04 the Camp did not go in untill nearly 8pm a good 12hrs after the first class went in
IMHO, the problem with the Olimpia is that the NPS are stuck in a time warp, (yes and before you all jump we have been there as well in the middle 80s-- and there were lots and lots in the classes) they have not twigged that the face of Showing has changed
ps know my spelling is bad but am stressed over getting ready for Christmas !!!!

Take Cheshire show any year this year 2006 massive classes all day long, in 2005 championship finished about 9pm classes had been on all day, 65 plus in C/D class i think that is harder to win than any of the Olympia qualifiers i have ever seen. So surley if you had to be a Champion at these shows you really would have the best ponies in the country there must be a couple of ponies that got easy tickets to Olympia this year were entries were very low ie Scotland. This would never happen at the HOYS championships.

I still think it will be interesting to see how many more people do Olympia classes next year now that the competition card has been dropped though.
