I was reading the ballot for NPS, and I feel that the introduction of M&M at HOYS may have contributed to the decline in numbers forward for Olympia qualifiers, as the class winner qualifies obviousley you have more chance of qualifying for HOYS and this in tern means that people are spending their hard earned cash on HOYS quals as opposed to Olympia quals.
For some people doing both is just not an option - in terms of finance???
Having been brought up throughout my teens and in to adulthood with an annual trip to Olympia since the late 1980's, sometimes qualifying and even getting placed on two occasions the M&M final at Olympia will always be the ultimate climax to the M&M show season!
what do others think? Hoys or Olympia?

;D definately HOYS for me because we generally qualify, we have even won olympia sections but never qualified, there always seem to be one mega pony that even if it gallops or not takes the ticket!! Also stallions and mares seem to me mostly to go through (I know some geldings get there as well). Good luck to everyone competing we are coming to watch wouldnt miss it and one day we might even compete there!

I'd be happy to qualify for either!!!
For me the most prestigious has to be Olympia. HOYs is great but even though you qualify the costs of entering the final and stabling etc are huge. Whereas you pay no entry fee or stabling at Olympia and every competitor gets a Baileys Horse Feeds rug - I'm told they even lay on free tea and coffee for the grooms.

Good question, especially as I am not an M & M person. However, if I were to join the cuddly hairy division I would at least want to aim for Olympia as I have always perceived it to be the pinacle of M & M showing.

Olympia, most definitely - for me it really is THE most prestigious M&M competition around. That said I would definitely not turn away from competing at HOYS!

Olympia is 100% the creme de la creme of ridden M&M showing, its SO hard to qualify for and thats what makes it so good. Wouldn't say no to HOYS but it is proportionatly easier to qualify for HOYS.

Having taken showjumpers to both I would have to say Olympia - The atmosphere is electric and everyone is in Christmas mode. All the jumpers decorate the stables etc. It is the real end of season party.

I love both but from a competing point of view it definatley Olympia. Its all about the taking part once your there and everyone seems to be jolly and in the Christmas spirit even though its nerve recking!!

I think both are good from a qualifing point but attending Olympia makes you feel more important as previously said there is more atmosphere. Also the ring is bigger and it is better for the spectators as well as the competitors
Good luck everyone nearly there.

My ideal would be Olympia but held when HOYS is held rather than December - I think it is difficult to keep natives in showing condition for December, particularly when you live in cold, wet Scotland, without compromising on how they are kept.

OLYMPIA all the way,the above sums it up.I am the most competitive person on gods earth but never actually care what the result is once i am there ,just pleased if my ponies have "hacked" that special electric atmosphere only Olympia can provide and just feel its an honour to compete there

Just watched the Puissance on BBC2
OLYMPIA OLYMPIA - no contest.
We have been fortunate enough to have qualified 6 times on two very special ponies. Nothing compares with Olympia at Christmas. We took my eldest grandaughter to watch last year. She now can't wait to try and qualify herself. She has competed at HOYS twice but Olympia is the icing on the cake.
Good luck to everyone - enjoy every moment

The tension at Olympia is incredible - you could hear a pin drop -and I don't think you quite get that atmosphere anywhere else. It makes you so proud of our country's native breeds and gob-smacked by the standard of the ponies qualified. It makes you feel really priviliged to be there and even more priviliged to have judged some of them. On the day you wish two thirds of them could be in the first six !

OLYMPIA DEFINATELY!! but havin been luky enuf 2 have ridden at both a few times, hoys atmosphere is getting better and better. but olympia is far more 'prestegious', jus wish there presentation was as 'electric' as the championship at hoys, (ie) spotlights, dimmed lights etc etc!! ;D

Olympia of course, but if the change the rules to restrict riding at Olympia in any way I believe HOYs will be come more prestigious.
Olympia because it is more difficult as you have to be champion.
Do think HOYs think that the M&M's arent good enough and stick us out the back.

I dont understand why you all thik it is more prestigious to win at Olympia, if you were champion at HOYS you have beaten the very best of all breeds, now according to the comments on this website most of the ponies that have qualified Olympia did so on favours and fixes your words not mine so i am confused, Also if you are champion at a HOYS qualifier that has 5 classes bursting at the seams you have won a lot more ponies than at an Olympia qualifier were there has been terribly poor entries this year. And last but not least at HOYS qualifiers you have had to please 2 judges not 1, so in mho i think it is much harder to win a HOYS qualifier championship.

I dont understand why you all thik it is more prestigious to win at Olympia for M&M's olympia has provided a spectacular end of season finale for 28 years (yes it has been going that long) it is part of our heritage and lets face HOYS only started really doing M&M's and coloureds when it was going bust and needed the extra income!

I am not disputing what a great show Olympia is i am just confused why everyone is saying its more prestigious and much harder to qualify, when the classes are much larger and less qualifiers for HOYS and are there any easy HOYS qualifiers if so please tell me

I am not disputing what a great show Olympia is i am just confused why everyone is saying its more prestigious and much harder to qualify, when the classes are much larger and less qualifiers for HOYS and are there any easy HOYS qualifiers if so please tell me There isn't more qualifiers for Olympia than HOYS. Every HOYS qualifier show has 4 tickets with it, one for each section. Being champion at HOYS doesn't get you something extra in terms of getting to Olympia. To qualify for Olympia with the exception of the breed qualifiers, you have to win your section and then go champion against all the breeds to get your ticket. Its just sooo much harder than HOYS to qualify for Olympia, and no, not all (in fact hardly any) of the qualifiers are fixes....generallly thats just sore losers venting their jealousy after each qualifier; you get it after everything, there is always a connection ot the judge, or the horse didn;t go quite right etc etc, you just need to take whats said by people about qualifiers with a pinch of salt.

so in mho i think it is much harder to win a HOYS qualifier championship. Erm not really, once your in the hoys qualifier championship you have already qualified for hoys so who cares what the f**k happens but when in the olympia championship you have to bloody well ride for your life in order to come out top.

Sorry to correct you but if you are champion at a HOYS qualifier you have probably beaten in exess of 120 ponies in Olympia qualifier you have not won any were near that amount of ponies now i know that being champion doesnt get you anything but i am stating that it is harder to win a HOYS qualifier championship than an Olympia qualifier, so why is that so when you all insist Olympia is better does not make sence to me. I am after all a mere show pony person just moving into M&M certainly no expert not like a lot of people on here

BIT THICK think you have missed the point, it is MUCH easier to qualify for HOYS than Olympia. Lots more opportunities just have to be prepared to pay the entry fees ;D

...and IMO the higher entries for HOYS classes are exactly because you don't have to win the championship so entrants have more of a chance.....so only the best of the best usually paid (although won't have to any more!) for the Olympia ticket from NPS and gave it a go in those qualifiers. Olympia is still more prestigious IMO.

I am obviously not getting to grips with this, please bear with me and answer my question, even though it does not qualify you for anything, does no one agree that it is harder to win a HOYS qualifier championship than an Olympia Championship and will someone please explain why the entries for the Olympia qualifiers are poor if it is so good and why the entries for HOYS are so huge when you all slag off HOYS, and seem to love Olympia so much i am genuinely confused by it can you explain.

Statistically it is easier to qualify for Olympia IMO well for a welsh cob in some cases . How many in each Olympia class? 5-10? that means you have to beat around max of 50 ponies to qualify, whereas many welsh c/d (in recent years) there have been well in excess of 50 in the class I wouldn't mind either though
