i am looking for some black long boots, hopefully ones that do not break the bank! i have quite wide feet, not usually a problem, but i cant have any that are very narrow, i have looked at the ariat breamont, but i dont think you can show in them because they have laces on? - not sure about this but i was told by a friend
thanks everybody in advance!

As a present, my parents bought me the Ariat Women's Challenge II Field Boot Zip, which I do show in, and although they have the lace up bit on the front, it hasn't affected where I get placed, but they are kinda pricey. I did used to have the Mountain Horse High Rider Boots, which were really good and cost around £130, and they were fantastic. x

Regent do a lovely long leather showing boot (Grafton), the toe is quite square on them so they don't come in that narrow.
They come in black or brown (I got myself a brown pair from Showing Gems) still not worn them yet!
If anyone can tell me regarding the 'showing rules/etiquette' on the colour of boots worn - i.e If my boots are brown, do I have to wear a brown hat??

Paulien, I thought it was the colour of the collar that dictated the helmet colour, ie. navy colour=navy hat? I think navy is fine with brown boots. Muncageo, have a look on the Regent website for riding boots-they have some lovley ones for showing. x

erm, cue creaking whilst ancient Hollycane clambers on to her soapbox... brown boots are for polo players and cubbing and staff or servants....., never really correct for the ring as they are "field boots" not "Top boots". whilst they look suitably dashing on the polo field or on a particularly scrummy young farmer they are not correct dress for the ring at any time of day. They are particularly unflattering for any but the skinniest, longest of leg.
As to lace up field boots in general, same thing. Truly laces and zips are for the staff who have no help to get their boots on and off dahlink...... I have a particular dislike for these type of boots. They look thin and not very good quality and I think they are deeply unflattering for any shape leg but particularly for short ones. You never see dressage riders in these boots for a good reason, they allow totally flexibility in the ankle and are light which is fine if you are flinging yourself over fences and no-one cares but if you are trying to ride seriously a fixed bit of good box calf around the ankle is both flattering and useful to keeping a strong leg position. I've always bought Cavallos. Whilst not cheap I've only had two pairs in my whole life. The first pair is 26 years old and still going. I can't afford made to measure but there is a really good selection of size combinations. right I'll get off my box now....

We use Regents (long and short) for showing and Konigs for dressage - used to use Cavallos, but found Konigs better.

Awww thats so unfair - would I be really frowned upon then if I wore my brown boots?
They are so lovely....better think about taking up polo....or working for m'lord!
Or can I try just one outing in them and see what the judge says?
Very informative discussion though...hollycane you should get on your soapbox more often.

I refuse to get rid of my Ariat lace ups!! :L I think for local level, you'd get away with it Paulien, but for countys, you would need black boots. I dont think I read you for first post correctly :L x

Cavello or Konigs - pricey but you can often get a decent pair of second hands! My show boots were second hand and are a dream to ride in but I cant walk in them their first owner obviously only ever rode in them so the ankle is shaped so perfectly for riding!

Regent are lovely. I have(or had) a pair 34 yrs old and fabulous. Sadly my legs are now to fat for them so I have passed them on to my niece who loves them and they still look lovely. I personally also prefer the straight tops and garter straps to the dressage tops which seem popular today but then I am a traditionalist old fart!!!

They will sink a bit IF they are comfortable enough to wear until they do! There's nothing worse than trying to ride in something that is crippling you.

Black hunting boots with garter strap the only boots for the show ring. My regents have been boned within an inch of their lives and always get commented on by judges of the old school. I have a particular phobia about laces and dressage tops, neither of which are correct for showing or the hunting field. I do abit of judging at local level, and whilst manners, type and way of going always come first, if turn out is a consideration, I would rather see a pair of good rubber boots than laces and high tops.

paulien I too have bought a beautiful pair of brown boots on a whim. I mainly bought them for the wooden trees that came with them as the person selling them clearly hadn't a clue. I didn't believe said boots would fit me and I almost hoped they wouldn't but they fit like a glove. I love them and wear them cubbing. They also go fantastically well with a tweed SS habit I have. However I don't show anymore. But I love nice things.... and I don't have an OH to answer to

I have a pair of Cavallo size 5.5 long leather, black showing boots with narrow/medium leg for sale How much fayeandash? ;D I'll be investing in a new pair of long boots at some poiny for this year...zips have bust on my current ones. Think it's due the the fact they're so comfy I wore them 24/7, Mum wasn't happy lol. I think brown boots are lovely but never invested in a pair as I wasn't sure if they where correct-so thanks for ironing that out for us hollycane. However, I do love the laced ones and have always wanted a pair! Would I really be marked down purely for having laces?

Well if turnout is an issue, to be correct you should wear traditional black straight topped boots with garter straps. However, in most ridden classes you aren't actually marked on correctness of turnout, so I would say go with your personal preference. A lot of top level riders wear the dressage top boots and it doesn't seem to hold them back, if your horse is well put together and goes nicely the boots won't make a difference one way or the other.
