I thought I'd put up a list of everday foods that are toxic to dogs. Many people (including myself) give titbits off the table to our dogs, not realising that many foods we take for granted can actually make your dog sick.
So I have taken bits of information off the internet and posted them here. Hopefully this will be useful Info for some people, but i really hope not, as you dont want to be feeding these foods to your lovely pooches.
1 - Chocolate - we all know I am sure that chocolate is very bad for your dogs, and you keep all items out of your dog's reach, but sometimes no matter how hard you try your dog will still get hold of some. The offending substance in chocolate is Theobromine your dog eating this will have this effect on his body (note the following is also includes caffeine)
•Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant
•Cardiovascular stimulant
•Increase blood pressure (mild)
•Nausea and vomiting
More of the theobromine is in dark chocolate and less in milk chocolate. Dog chocolate has had this removed so is safe for your dog to eat.
2 - Onions -
Most people know about the dangers of chocolate to dogs but many people have never heard of onion toxicity in pets. They’ve perhaps fed their dog foods containing onion such as leftover pizza, hamburger, or gravy and nothing happened. A small amount may not cause a problem since onion toxicity is dose dependent. However, onions in any form (raw, cooked, dehydrated or powdered in a seasoning) can create a life-threatening form of hemolytic anemia in dogs.
3 - Grapes and Raisins - The consumption of grapes and raisins presents a potential health threat to dogs. Their toxicity to dogs can cause the animal to develop acute renal failure (the sudden development of kidney failure) with anuria (a lack of urine production).
4 - Macadamia Nuts - Macadamia nuts, while generally not considered fatal, can cause your dog to experience severe illness. Ingestion of just a handful of nuts can cause adverse effects in any dog.
Signs include vomiting, weakness, depression, drunken gait, joint/muscle pain, and joint swelling.
Onset of signs typically occurs within 6-24 hours.
5 - Xylitol - Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener most often found in chewing gum and candy. In dogs, it stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin, resulting in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Xylitol ingestion can also cause severe liver damage. Signs of toxicity can occur within 30-60 minutes and include weakness, drunken gait, collapse and seizures.
6 - Fruit Pits and Seeds - Apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, and plum pits contain the toxin cyanide.
Signs of cyanide poisoning include vomiting, heavy breathing, apnea tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, skin irritation.
Also take note that the leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Also, the fat content is not healthy for dogs.
If anyone knows of anything else, please add to the list
