poor saffy (mums showjumper) got cast yesterday as she has a rare skin condition (itchy skin we call it) it can't be cured so to control it we have to bathe her with hibbi scrub (think that's how you spell it) everyday. because of her condition she roles an awful lot and has been cast about 5 times or even more in the past few months.

We got a phone call so we went back to the farm to find that saffy is fine, she has a few scrapes around her eye and it's slightly swollen, but nothing major. so we're talking with our friend, only to find out that a women called Angela had followed Natalie to stable to see what was going on and instead of helping, she stood at the stable door bad mouthing saf's bed and the way we look after her (this is before we got there)! "oh her beds too thick, her bankings are to high" and "look at the haynet, it's hanging far to low, she's had her leg trapped in that (HER HAY NET IS NEAR ENOUGH FULL AND IS KNOW WHERE NEAR IN THE REACH OF SAFF'S LEGS!!)"

well Angela, the reason why saf has a thick bed and high bankings is to ensure that she can role back over encase there is no body to help her!!! and it is physically impossible for her to get tangled in the haynet because the holes are too small!!! and she can't really talk anyway about the welfare of anyones ponies because half the time she can never find hers as she's always escaping out of the stable!

i'm trying to sound mean and rude, but she tipped the scale this time and i would like to see her try and cope with such a serious condition! pfft!

any way rant over, Saff is a happy smiley horse again if your wondering xx

Just a thought, but Lovepink was recommending a company that supplied anti itch stuff and was hugely pleased with it. Am about to give it a go myself for our next door neighbour's poor old horse that suffers with a problem like your horse (they also do stuff for dogs and cats) - this might help your horse.

I hated being on a livery yard as everyone is so like your Angela! chin up xxx

I would agree you need to try to find something else to use on horse's skin.

Hibiscrub is fine for rare medicinal purposes but is really harsh for more frequent use. If you try bathing in this yourself for, say, a week, you will find your own skin red and itchy and your, shall we say, more delicate areas, will be red swollen and inflamed within a few days.

we only use about half a capful of hibiscrub and stir it in a bucket of water, so we don't really use loads of it, we do some times just use water with a tiny amount of shampoo, or just water. we also change her rugs regularly and clean them. she's doing really well now, her coat looks brilliant (touch wood).

Try Coatex Medicated Shampoo which is specifically designed for the condition you describe. With regard to the hibiscrub, however little you use, makes no difference over long term. Believe me, I have used it on myself for a condition and it wasn't pretty.

Seems like you know what you're doing! We had a 11hh who always pawed his net and managed to pull it off the stable wall plus bracket! Never actually found him with his foot in the net though! Haylage nets solved the problem! Good to see that the horse has a careing, knowledgeable home and good luck with managing the condition.

Haynets coming down doesn't necessarily mean horse has got a foot caught in it - my cob used to just get frustrated with his (either they were empty or the hay wasnt coming out quick enough) and rip/bite them down!!
