hi just wondering what all your views are on:
what age would you have your ponies teeth checked? how regular? if you had baby pony with wolf teeth which is only out at grass no work, no bridle etc. would you have them removed?

My EDT recommends you get ponies checked as soon as you are thinking of bitting them or sooner if you think there is a problem. I get my lot checked once a year minimum. I would only have wolf teeth removed if my EDT thought they were likely to interfere when working the pony.

All ours are done every six months, including the brood mares. They are checked but dont always need much attention. Our yearling was done recently and his wolf teeth have come through but nothing is going to be done about them per se unless they do cause a problem, they were the cause probably of a lot of head shaking and obsessive chewing, but as they have now come through, that has died down. Our dentist can tell by damage and wear between first and second visits usually how often she needs to come, and does'nt over egg the cake if she is happy. I did find that when the mares were ridden, their teeth needed more attention than they do now. I prefer them to be seen from an early age, as their jaws are growing and changes are taking place and it is better they are monitored than waiting until they are losing condition and quidding, by this time also they are often in pain.

I always have teeth and backs checked before I break something just to eliminate any problems before i start. The others get done once a year or checked if I think there is a problem.

Interesting views! We check teeth once a year for most ponies, twice for anything over about 15 years old and babies when we start to ride them. Some of the babies especially colts (obviously) wear a bridle if shown in hand at two onwards and I never thought to check their teeth at that stage. Maybe I will now.

I have mine checked every 6 - 9 months, from the age of 2, as that's when they'll often have a bit in for the inhand classes. Alot also depends on the age and conformation of the mouth, as I like to prevent any problems before they start, I haven't had any problems with wolf teeth, but I think that's luck more than anything else. I have also found using Nathe/happy mouth bits makes the youngsters less fussy when they are teething.

Wolf teeth are a no go. I always have mt EDT to check teeth every 6-12 months and i have them do the youngsters done at an early age even if it is just to get them used to equipment. I would have wolf teeth out to give them time to get used to it I feel that because they have no root they must move abiut even when just eating etc.
