We have a small stud and never had liveries until I was approached by someone who I knew slightly (worked in the same building I used to) back in July asking if she could bring her TB mare to us on DIY. Spent quite a lot of time talking to her and she was dissing her current yard (who I didnt know) because people were interfering with the way she kept her mare. She pampers it and is a bit OTT with rugging etc, but its her mare and the way she keeps it is not my business and as long as she isnt neglecting it I would not interfere. I emphasised the point that we really are not a livery yard and not set up as such. My stables have a bit of a drip here and there, and although big boxes they are far from perfect, we really need to re-roof but that will happen as and when I can afford it. We have a sand school which was in before we moved here and again it has a few problems, the membrane is lifting in places, it freezes in winter and we have no lights. I told her that I could get her haylage delivered when mine was delivered but she would have to arrange her own bedding and feeding. I would not be providing extras.
I showed her our small tack room, which with a bit of a squeeze could accomodate her saddle and bridle, she said she had some bales of hay and straw, so I gave her a corner of our very small hayshed.
She started moving in and my God she has more kit for one animal than I have for my twenty! I cannot move for her stuff, I cannot get to my own in the tackroom because all of hers is in the way. She started moaning within the month. She has a drip in her stable (I told her before she moved in ) her hay got wet because the roof in the hayshed has a problem in the new roof with overlapping Onduline. The sand school isnt level enough for her and her horse is tripping. She wants lights so she can ride at night. She wants someone to check her horse is dry under its rug when she cant get up. She asked the young girl that rides one of my cobs to come up at six in the morning once its stabled (its still living out atm) to feed it and turn it out, because she works 30 miles away. This young girl has a husband , three dogs to walk and a job to get to too!.
I have since discovered that she has been on three yards in a year, all of whom have asked her to leave because of her hostility and behaviour. She has a gob on her like I have never heard, and keeps accusing people of using her kit (which we dont) and even accused me of lifting her dogs bowl, because she couldnt find it and my dogs happened to have stainless steel bowls like hers! (She later remembered she had put it in her trailer) but did I get an apology ? No. She falls out with her work colleauges, her neighbours, and even strangers on a regular basis. She went to watch at a show and because the burger she bought didnt measure up to her expectations, she yoked the manager of the centre and yelled and cussed the place down.! She asked the same young girl to get her horse in for the farrier because she couldnt be there and when the farrier appeared at 8.30 am he was really narked because she had specifically asked for that time. As he usually comes around lunchtime and this had screwed up his run. Now if she could only be there at that time to hold her own horse I could understand but she had caused a problem for him for no reason.
I have bought a washing machine to wash my rugs and it is to be plumbed into the tack room, so I have asked her to store her kit in her trailer, and I also asked her to put her straw in it too, because I cant even clean up as there is so much of her stuff here. I have tried to explain (again) that this is my HOME and, yes I have quite a lot of stuff of my own, but I did tell her we are not set up as a livery yard. She telephoned me yesterday asking me to check her mare as she was waiting in for an engineer and whilst she was on I mentioned that the haylage was being delivered in two weeks, and that big bale straw was going to be about £40 and it would have to be stored in her trailer. That was too expensive for her so I suggested another place who sold small bales but rather pricey. This didnt suit either so she then said she would leave it to me to source her straw for her.!!
Now I have not said much till now, but I told her in no uncertain terms I would not be doing that and DIY means just that. I have done her a favour by taking her on but she has caused me more grief than anything else. My OH runs when he sees her coming and when I am doing my own at night she follows me around telling me all her woes, who she has fallen out with now, how ill she is (she has been off work more often than she attends) and generally depressing me.
How I wish I had said no we dont do livery!! She pays me eighteen quid a week for all the hassle its just not worth it
Rant over.
