Ok, My dog is nearly 6. Used to get motion sick in cars...but cured that... for the last couple years she's been quite bad in cars.... Not bad behaved but... worries a lot... cant describe it ... she pants a lot from the moment she gets in the car (not a "im too hot" pant..) she also visibly shakes in the car. It doesnt matter if she's in the boot, the back seat or the front seat (generally she's in the boot) but if im transporting stuff with the back seat folded then she's on the front... I am aware that it could be my driving... or road rage to be more precise, but in all honesty she's like this in any car, not just mine. Tried DAP collar, didnt work, have also tried Recsue Remedy which also didnt work.... She's really well trained..does obidience ever week, and has passed all her Good Dog Citizens with the Kennel Club.... Any idea's anyone?

I have one that is the same... she doesnt worry if she is going in the car for walks or somewhere she knows will be fun.. as soon as I go anywhere else she is a mess. I am not going to re train her now as she is nearly 15. I suggest you go on very short trips and make them all fun.. max 5 mins in the car.. try a nice little walk at the end of each trip with some fun thrown in... good luck

All the time she's in the car, it's going to end up fun... (im a dog walker) so she's either going a walk, or to see the ponies.... she can be in for 5mins to 5hours... she is better though with company (im not getting her a dog - She already has two cats )

There was a dog whisperer programme that covered this ages ago and I'm desperately trying to remember what he did. One was a fear from an accident but another one it had something to do with a chasing instinct it just couldn't cope with the anticipation or the actual sight of things rushing past it was a sheltie so I guess that makes sense.

I know this is an old thread, but I don't seem to have read it before, jaysmum, could you crate your dog? If she is used to being crated in the house, and sees the crate as her 'secure' space, she might feel calmer if she travels in the crate in your car? Millie has a crate for travelling and happily jumps in there - she's been crated from a puppy and that was always her 'own' space where she could go to get away from the kids or just to have some quiet time.

Only just seen the last two replies.... thanks for reading and new suggestions.... Honeybees - she can be a bit reluctant to get in... kinda stays near the house, but sometimes she's wanting to get in.... MM - she has a crate in the house but no crate will fit in my Polo

you could try feeding her in the car and not going anywhere... so she associates cars with nice places...

I'm not familiar with how much boot space there is in a polo, but we have a crate with a sloping front, which is designed to fit in hatchbacks? Robinsons sell them? Don't know if that's any help.

After seeing your post RE the accident with your ex I think I would be a little nervous getting into a car aswell Was she injured in the accident? If so she probably associates car+pain... If that is the case I would think this is defanitely one for a behaviorist... Although if it was my dog I would try parking on a quiet road, with drivers door open and a loose leash. Then get a willing friend to drive slowly past slowly from various directions, that way you can get an idea of what is generally scaring her and move on from there. Is your dog secured in the car? Seatbelt or the crate that MM is suggesting? Hope that is some kind of help ... this is a tricky one!

She's totally fine when in the car.... (accident didn't result in her being hurt, only frightened ) I can't put a crate in as im a dog walker and need to get other dogs in too lol, I don't have a guard either at the moment, and she doesn't jump over the seats even though she could if she wanted too. I deffinetly think she's better with company in beside her... one friend who is a behavourist said that it might be the engine vibes she can feel - which makes sence.. along with every thing else (the crash etc) I've tried the seatbelt.. that actually made her worse she seems better for the time being... and deffinetly knows that car = fun places..
