Howling?? I assume they howl to pass on the news..... you could try aversion therapy or teach your dog/s to howl on command... then never give them the command....

it sounds like excitement you need to leach them the quiet command and when they start use it and then give them a treat xx

we forget they are really wolves..... I went out to do the horses and the grown up dogs were out too with the 15 week puppy left inside.. came back to find her howling her head off.. I was even stood in the kitchen for a few minutes and she didnt realise I was there.. was the funniest thing ever.. bless...

I think domesticated dogs as we know them really are not wolves, but the innuit dogs, Huskies/Mals, Utonagons etc, still have that wolfish look about them. Anything else has had the "wolf" eradicated out of them.

I think your wrong.. dogs display a lot of wolfish behaviour and tendancies. They may be domesticated but still have a strong tie with their ancestors..

we can but.... Dogs are Canis Lupus Familiaris and Wolves are Canis Lupus. and also dogs and wolves share 99.8% of their mitochondrial DNA so I agree, we have domesticated our dogs over 1000's of years but there is still a wolf in them.. oooowwweeeeeeeeeeoooooooo LOL

anyway BingBong.. getting back to the original thread...
as dogs have descended from wolves which are howlers, howling is the verbal communication of wolves who howl to gather the pack especially when there is danger.
So our dogs may howl when it is trying to get the attention of its pack i.e you... or simply hungry, thirsty or uncomfortable bored, lonely etc etc...
if the have seperation anxiety they canhowl and evenif your in the room, tehy may howl to get your attention.. as you are part of their pack... ;D

Its all very interesting......might change the person who looks after them if we ever get away! They are always with us and are very active with us on farm, so not a t all lonely or bored, but they started again yesterday when she very kindly turned up with a christmas card......don't want them to hate her looking after them.....odd !!

i have just completed a certificate in animal behaviour and while yes dogs have evolved from wolves, they have changed so much that we cannot treat dogs like wolves when discussing behaviour. they are physiologically very different. for the initial part of the course we were taught about wolves so we were aware of the background knowledge but were advised to not base any judgement of behaviour our canine pets display back to their ancestory. this goes the same for the word "dominance" which is very overused. i suggest everyone reads the book 'dominance - fact or fiction' it really makes you think of it in a completely different way!

not to add fuel, but in recent years there is new evidence to say, that wolves and dogs came from two different groups, and our domestic dogs came from Asian, african gene pool, you can see in Asian dogs (known as yellow dogs) how these predecessor's would of looked, your dogs are prop singing to welcome there group members. which is a fallback to the singing dogs of the past. make your visitors come in with as little fuss as possible ignore the two dogs and you send them to their beds or own space, they will soon get the message that their howling (noise) singing is unwelcome.
