My 10yo Jack russell has been diagnosed with diabetes today. She has to go back to the vets tomorrow for blood tests. Has anyone any experience of diabetes in dogs?

I run a kennels and have an increasing number of dogs and cats who are diabetic, once the vets get the correct dosage most seem to be very accepting of daily injections, I usually give a treat then inject and then give another treat (obviously treats that are vet approved), of course there can be side affects which I'm sure your vet will talk through with you. It really isn't as bad as it first seems. Good luck. I'm sure you will cope admirably.

my lovely girl who I sadly had PTS in May had insulin dependant diabetes.. There are lots of issues that go with this as it affects the endocrine system. Getting the doseage correct is the most important thing adn that is not an easy task.. its not like in humans where you can do random blood glucose levesl.. Your dog will need to go on to the vets regulalry for glucose curves to find the correct doseage.. if she is spayed all the better, if not I suggest you spay her ASAP, it does help with the diabetes for some strange reason.. pm me if you want some more help...

we had a bit*h diagnosed with diabetes where i work and she was spayed and it was a complete cure! not always that fortunate but if she is entire then it would be something to think about however its usually sensible to try and stabilise them a bit first.
