what happens if you have paid your stud fee, your mare in scanned in foal and lo and behold the breeder wont issue a covering certificate they have now turned round and said i owe more money ( i dont as i paid my half as i half owned the mare and the other owner paid her half. i have since paid the other half owner out to the tune of her half of the stud fee so i know i am right on the price) they have also stated that i owe them a weeks mandatory keep whcih was never mentioned at the time AND I WAS LIVERY AT THE YARD ANYWAY! any advice welcomed. i know i havent been on her posting much but do look quite often

never mind , if you dont get your covering certificate, you can do a bloodtype to prove parentage with just a few hairs from the projeny..

ponies4me you should phone the nps office and tell them that you are having this problem. They take a very dim view of this.
A certain stud was taken to court over this exact problem and they did not get away with it. Make sure you keep notes of any telephone conversations or correspondence that you have with the owners of the stallion. They cannot get away with it!

I had this problem 8 years ago and took the stallion owner to a small claims court. I got my certificate.

I run a small riding pony stud and upon any mare leaving the stud after service the owners are given a bill and a breakdown of costs, this is then signed by me when the cheque is handed over along with a service certificate. This is the owners proof of payment and correct documentation for registering the foal, at the end of the day its the mares owners who will (all being well) show their youngsters thus providing a service to the stallions owner as giving free advertisement. It is very alarming to hear that you are not being given the covering cert, I hope you get it sorted out as going down the dna road is extreemly expensive, I have been there and done that! ( the dna route will cost you in the region of £250.00) If the stallion owner is not being helpful you must contact whichever the society is your foal is to be registered with as it also affects them as loosing them a registration and also you not being able to promote the breed you wish to. Hope all goes well for you!

right have phned the nps this morning. they said it is a problem i have to sort out with the stallion owner! they are having words though as they havent done something they shoudl have concerning his registration!
on a better note, the dna will only cost me £40 per kit and i have to do the mare and the foal. once the nps have the results back they will be able to register the foal. at least i will be able to prove my foal is by this stallion by blood type!
am gong to send a solicitors letter anyway and see what happens. a covering certificate is obviouly the easier option but hey ho. wouldnt recommend anyone sends their mare to this person tho - they are appalling! and he is a very well known HOYS winner!

have you tried contacting the breed society of stallion re this. they should have supplied you with a certificate, and you shouldn't have to go further out of pocket with DNA (unless you are required to do so by breed society for registration of foal) what would have happened if you wanted to do broodmare classes where they ask for the certificate?
so are you going to name and shame them?

Dont expect help from the WPCS.! When I had my problem they said it was a civil matter thats why I went down the small claims route and it didnt cost me a fortune either!

didn't you receive a nomination form with details of stud fee before agreeing to use the stallion and then a bill with details of the service fee, keep and grooms fee etc before you paid? I would expect an established stud to provide this info in advance.

I too have a riding pony stud, and am sorry to hear of your problems. If you have all the facts in writing, and you are in the right then I hope that you receive your certificate - perhaps a solicitors letter will frighten them into action. Hope so. Please name and shame them as it will warn other people to get a certificate issued on payment of a bill from these unscrupulous people. People like them give all stud owners a bad name.

I always get a covering vcertificate when I collect my mare. I guess it is more difficult if your mare is in the same yard. I find the NPS are very helpful with this kind of problem but only if you put the whole thing to them in writing. I wish you luck!

i thought i was going to have this problem a couple of years ago i had put my mare to a stallion that was on lease to a friend - the owners took it back a week later and would give me a certificate until foal was born. got it no hassle then

I think stud owners who do this kind of under-handed thing should be named and shamed! After all if I knew of studs who behave in this way I would certainly not send a mare or at least inform friends not to take their mares to them.........who needs that added stress and expense anyway!

i am not going to post this stud's name in open forum. its not fair to the mods. Thanks for being so responsible. I've given you a karma and hope it helps you get a satisfactory outcome. If you do take it further and get it resolved in your favour then I think it would be okay to name the stud as it will then be a matter of fact resolved by law.
