Husband claims that nothing he knows has happened (but he doesn't like the dog so unlikely to pay much attention) Gave some metacam last night. Advice please, obviously will go to vets on tues when they open again.

has he been swimming recently? i know when my lab swims in really cold water he often gets broken tail. Its normal for a while and then just bends downwards. My dog is a wimp about it and cries all the time but lots of dogs aren't that bothered. It generally gets better on its own but you might want to have it checked out. I think its technically called limber tail? www.woodhavenlabs.com/coldtail.htmlx

Happy to help
The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his Tongue.

I had a setter who broke her tail... have a good feel down it and see if she cries at any point... we splinted her tail as she actually broke the vertabrae rather than the space between which is the most common...
get your vet to check it out if its no better on Tuesday...
