I think that HOYS is an overall better show...the setting is nicer than at the RIHS. Some ponies suit one show better than the other because they are completely different... I think that Pebbly Pipe Dream had an advantage over some horses at the RIHS because both the pony and rider (at the time) competed in alot of cross country. They did deserve to win, they did an amazing round! However, I dont think that Pebble Pipe Dream would have done very well at HOYS because the courses arent flowing like at the RIHS. Obviously I cant judge, but that is just what I think.
I do not do that much Cross Country, only for schooling occasionally therefore the horses that I ride prefer HOYS than RIHS because I do more showjumping.

I suppose HOYS is such a huge show, & everyone's aim, so the atmosphere is amazing, & even if you're unplaced you feel like you've experienced something fantastic. I love the RIHS, Hickstead is a beautiful place, bit of a journey for us, but we still enjoy it. Probably HOYS overall though.

I think, (and this is just my opinion!) that when you think of RIHS and qualifying for it, it doesn't sound as good as qualifying for HOYS? For example, If two horses were for sale with a ride at RI or HOYS and they were very similar etc I'd go for HOYS as I just think it's a better show, better atmosphere, better place (more central than hickstead hard for us northen folk who have like 5 hours plus driving time, then fuel etc!) Although HOYS is extremely expensive, It would cost around a grand for us to be able to get to RI from yorkshire, alot cheaper for HOYS, but either one still great to qualify

Not sure, in terms of venue and atmosphere, that the two are comparable. Personally, I love outdoor shows and, having watched my daughter qualify for the first time (at her first attempt, I hasten to add!) for RIHS, I would think I'd have a very soft spot for that show. However, she has now set her sights for HOYS, so ask me again in about a year's time!!!

I prefer RIHS personally but you can't beat David Coles courses at HOYS.
