My dog has occasionally fits roughly about 6mths apart. Had loads of tests but nothing has been found. He has diazapham rectal tubes but is there an alternative maybe a holistic method etc. It is getting very expensive at vets for these medicines. Any ideas anyone?

I work at a vets and can say the tablets would probably be a lot cheaper. Is there a reason he is on the rectal tubes. Do you think holistic is the best way to for for epilepsy, as it can be quite serious although your dogs are quite far apart. I have heard of honey once a day in their food and after they have had a seizure. Thats based on blood sugar. Depends if you have an idea of what triggers the seizures. good luck x

I would say it depends on how long the fits are.. a friends dog has a fit about once every 6 months and they actually dont treat it. His fits are quite short , they make sure he is safe and leave him to come round.
I certainly would be going down a holistic route. Diazepam is a fantastic drug for seizures and if they are so bad you cant administer oral diazepam, then rectal is the only way to go.. sorry.

I have never been offered tablets just the rectal tubes. I never thought of honey but yes I do thing he might be affected with blood sugar levels as he usually gets fits when he is very tired. We try to keep to a minimum but his last one was just after xmas week. Although we had a quiet xmas with just my son here we were shopping etc and he gets pretty upset if he cannot go with us. I just find the vets fees are very high my last bill was for £365 so looking for an alternative if at all possible

if your dog is fiutting, you dont want to be putting anything in his mouth thats for sure, 1 you could get bitten and 2 he could choke...
if you think his blood sugars are not in balance get a glucose curve done at your vets....

Phenobarbitone, or Epiphen, is the most common treatment we use at work. One tablet twice a day at 12 hour intervals keep the blood levels constant and the dose is determined by how bad the epilepsy is. It is treatment the dog will be on for life, but it will stop the fitting

to be honest, if the dog only has 2 fits a year I would not want to treat with anti epilpetics, but just treat the fits when they happen.... its a horrid disease and the medication for epilepsy has nasty side effects so if you can manage without it, then its a lot better

My dog has epilepsy and had a fit last night, it was one of the worst ones he has had as it is the first time we have had to use the diazapam rectul tube. He is on the conrolled drugs above, im not sure which as my mum deals with it all. His last fit was around xmas too. It is very horrid to watch, and upsets me and my dog, but he doesnt seem to know what happens. We leave him in a dark room and usually my brother sits next to him and keeps him calm and quiet when he comes round. Just got to make sure that you keep the airway clear, i try and take his collar off as it begins when he looks like he is choking on something and then he collapses.

You are not obliged to get the medication from your vet. You are quite within your rights to get a prescription from your vet then shop around to find the best deal on the medication - the vet will just charge a small fee for the prescription. If you are buying on line, be aware that you should be asked for the prescription - if you are not asked then the company is probably dodgy.
