ive just read an article of a well known producer in horse deals (jan issue) and i am confused and a bit put off by the fact that yearlings are lunged and a few of the 2yro are backed ready to be brought on at 3yro for the show ring at 4. with the current thread re 2yro ridden in snug/lounge i feel disallusioned that this goes on

Its a very sad state of affairs really, we all know that to push them on like this does them no good, but it still seems to go on.

i agree kilnstown but lesser mortals seem to be castigated for doing exactly the same! i personally dont agree with it but i suppose each to their own it saddens me though that because of who it is people will not see this as a problem, but if anyone else they would shout their opinions from the rooftop.

That is very sad! and to openly talk about it in an interview? maybe they dont care what people think about them?

Im guilty of doing this with my section a, BUT he was a well grown yearling/ baby and had limited turnout on the yard so actually wasnt a case of lunging, i linked to lunge lines together and used to let him self lunge/ play so burn off steam, and also even from a yearling my boy is a year old than said pony and wanted him to be a true childs pony, so as baby/ toddler, my little boy was hovered over him from almost a yearling maybe 2 - 3 times, saddle went on at 2 for a few very short rides 9, son was about the same weight as a heavyweight turnout rug, then more as a 3 year old, came out at 4 and won overall lead rein at 2 clubs, never was he stressed or pressured, He also sees a chiroprator / massuse regularly who say he in fine shape and it worked for him,
Not saying it would for all my 3 y o Highland is far less mentally mature than my sec a was, I agree that any hard/ stressful work is wrong, but sadly look at the TB industry, as a producer/production etc sometimes they dont have the time and dont want to wait and it is a business, same as racing, some can afford to have horses and replace them and dont always have thier best interests at heart, but some are pleasure and some are business thats just the way it is, my 2 are family, BUT they have to behave and if i need to start working my new one soon on the lunge etc then it will happen i am hoping to leave till the autumn but if he is getting bored and needs more stimulation ? we will have to do something.

I don't understand what the rush is? Fair enough if u want to have a quick sit on but to actually have a horse ridden at that age?

cayo ive no qualms about lightweights sitting on 2yro in stable if they so wish tb,s are raced at two but they are different bred for the job (see mummys posts in lounge) i just think ordinary horses and ponies should be left to mature a bit before age appropriate education starts. i dont want to argue but i think some youngsters are rushed on to quickly just to make their debut as 4yro in the showring/jumping ring but that is just my opinion and i know each horse is different regarding temprement/maturity

I don't do anything with my babies other than feet and brushing till their summer of their 3rd year, and often not till they are 4, I don't like lunging youngsters at all as I feel it damages joints - Hocks..

My little section a i had from a foal. My daughter who was the same age as the pony started having a little sit on the pony in the stable when they were 2 she is a very small child only 33lb age 6 when the pony was nearlly 3 she had a little walk on her but no tack pony in a head coller and me holding on to the child. Dont agree with them being tacked up and ridden at 2.

My fell was only backed last year at 6! He has always been very immature and I wanted to let him grow and become confident in him self, he has only been broken 4 months but has taken to it like a duck to water, he has his first ridden class in 2 weeks, we have just bought a rising 4 connie, only broken 2 months ago and never lunged, long reined or hacked etc before breaking process, he is a super pony - completely unspoilt and very confident and now happily walk, trot and cantering and going on short hacks! I have no problem with ponies been sat on by a lightweight rider etc but if you rush then you end up with a rushed looking pony IMO
