My daughters are 11 and are looking forward to the concours classes at champ shows this year. Last year they wore proper velvet riding hats with a ribbon round but it does not look very nice - can they wear top hats at that age in that class?
Thank you!

some of the children of this age i have seen in these classes are wearing toppers... but i would not let my 13 year old in any class without a hat.. no matter how good the pony... that said, i do wear one myself for the evening !?!

my daughter wears her top hat on her fr mm, he is as safe as houses, however if they arent allowed just a black show hat im afraid....im a little traditional and dont like to see any bands or bows or anything else in Concours classes, after all they are supposed to be traditional costume...IE period costume and definately NO BARE ARMS....

Toppers are not for children IMO, they offer little in the way of protection (and even the safest pony can spook). Not all concours classes are for traditional dress, I've seen lots of 'fantasia' classes too, although they are sometimes a little bizarre

Personally I think a velvet hat with a flesh harness looks really smart and is safer as well.

At 11, you can wear a top hat but the childs parent must sign an agreement to prove that you have allowed your child to do so.

I'm 13, and I wear a top hat. I used to wear the velvet ones, but it really didn't go with my dress. My pony, Monty is as safe as houses, honestly. I can control him, and he's not fussed about the dress. It is, up to you. If you really think you want them to, then it's your choice, but if anything happens, your in full responsibility for what happens! Not meaning to sound harsh there But it just completes the picture with a top hat, but if you'd prefer your daughters to be safer, rather than the pretty picture, then thats your decision! With my top hat :

as long as your children realise not to fall off and in the worst case scenario hang on for dear life they should be ok, i do agree toppers look much better:) welshiegirl you and your pony look fab and a nicer picture with a topper on x
