bit of advice needed . i have bought a coloured traditional colt.
i believe there is a test to see if he carries the homozygous gene and will throw coploured foals. can anyone tell me what is involved and the approximate cost?

If both parents are coloured then there is a chance he could be Homo. This company does it www.horsedna.co.uk/ There are others that do and its about £20 Just pull some mane out and send it away

A bit more information. Genes come in pairs. If he is coloured, ie tobiano, himself he carries at least one copy anyway or he wouldn't be tobiano but solid coloured - it just acts to put white patches on the base colour, whatever that is. If he has one copy, known as being heterozygous, then on average half his foals will be tobianos. If he has two copies all his foals will be tobiano. Homozygous is not a gene, but the definition of having both genes of the relevant pair (could refer to ANY gene) the same.
