watched on the new the other night about 'medical dogs'.absolutely fantastic what they are trained for. This little girl had a rare strain of diabetes and could fall very ill instantly.the dog is trained to smell when her blood sugars drop (app.exudes an odour).the dog is with her 24/7. at school it alerts her teachers, at home her mum and sleeps with her at night. if in the night it licks her to alert her (wake her up)and if no reaction wakes up her mum!!!The dog was a golden labrador. Now it got me thinking after watching was it fair on the dog...dont jump on me just your views..at school it sat next to her its head lay on the desk at home never left her side. thinking it could never go off for a run because of the dangers of leaving the little girl unattended and potential risk involved and it wouldnt be doing its job..only had this strain of thought as turned away a youngster after training for own time so as not to stale and were only talking 30/45 min training this dog is 24/7 and still an animal at the end of the day ..and yes if it was my daughter i would want a medical dog!!!

ive seen a similar program were the dog can signal an epiletic fit, also sniffer type dogs that have alerted owners to skin cancer!! not sure about the latter but think our 4 legged canine friends are much under estimated
