I am shocked and appalled by the treatment ( and cost ) of a vet today!! I have a four month old pomeranian puppy who has had sickness and diarrhea on and off since friday. I did the usual and starved her and gave her diorolyts . I spoke to my vets emergency and they were lovely, and told me i was doing the right thing and wait and see as the emergency fee was £119 + VAT!!!! thats without even being actually seen!!! These people are apparently animal lovers!! By this morning she had made no improvement so I phoned a local vet, who is within a large franchise pet store , who could only see her at 3pm. I took her along wrapped in a blanket and the vet slouched on the sideboard asked a couple of questions then eventually felt her tummy and took her temperature! he then said she needed to stay in overnight and be rehydrated and to call in the morning. as we were leaving we asked the receptionist who would be checking on her and she said NO ONE!!! They close at 4PM and open at 9PM!!!! My poor little pup would be alone in a cage for 17 hours!!! We promptly asked for her back . they put her on fluids for half an hour and gave her an anti sickness jab and an antibiotic, we were given medicine for dirrohea if it reocurred ! The vet then said she would have been ok on her own as she didnt need feeding!!!! I was charged £151.62 for this treatment!! My question is.....if boarding kennels and other animal facilities have to have someone on site 24 hrs a day then why cant this company??? I know my regular vet is always there at night. Also where do these prices come from. I would pay anything for my pets but come on lets be practical!!! Surely , to be a veterinary its a vocation? Not a get rich quick business? ? Please give me your opinon!

I think that is disgusting! So glad you asked the receptionist about who would be looking after her, how on earth could they leave the poor wee pup for that long without checking to see if she was ok!! Anything could have happened to her, and then to charge that amount of money is appalling! I do hope she's improving and you won't need to go back to the vets again..sending you both lots of hugs.

Happy to help

I wouldn't pay it. Find yourself a nice local practice where the vets or nurses check them overnight. That is disgraceful. If a dog has a cannula in, it needs checking regularly in case it chews them out. What totally dreadful service. How is the pup now?

I had a pony with colic .the vet wanted me to take him in to their hospital. just as i was about to load him up i thought to ask who would be with him overnight----- the answer NO-ONE! THANK YOU VERY MUCH BUT HE CAN STAY HERE & I WILL SIT UP WITH HIM!Also won't be charged £300 for the priviledge of him being there overnight!!

Ah silverghost that is awful too! What are these people thnking of. Hope your pony made a good and full recovery!!. My puppy has just come home, she is weak but has wagged her tail at us all so that is a start. I took her back to my regular vets who are wonderful and one vet lives on site, but they know that as I have worked with dogs for twenty years she is as well to be at home with me watching her> They have left a cannula in and as long as she doesnt get any worse I can remove it tomorrow night so fingers crossed. I still have an issue with the price of emergency vets in the area! They all use the same ones which are which the nearest is 20 miles away! I worked at a vet years ago and a vet or vet nurse stayed over but even that same surgery uses this same emergency service now . Whats that all about? ??

That is so disgraceful, I would not stand for my pet to be left alone overnight when they are well never mind when they are ill. I thought it would be negligent to leave any animal unsupervised in the middle of treatment incase anything went wrong or they took a turn for the worst. I really hope your pup makes a speedy recovery.
I know you probably know more than I do with regards to dogs as you obviously have a lot of experience behind you and you are getting the pup sorted but when my friends pom had diarrhea and they got her sorted she was told to feed scrambled egg as being such a small breed the other food she was giving her was too rich. I don't know if this would help.
Just wishing the puppy a quick and full recovery.

Thankyou everyone for your kindness and support, Buboo took a turn for the worse but we got her to our regular vet again and they kept her on a drip for 36hrs. This helped her a great deal and she is now back to the noisy, bonkers puppy we know and love! IHere is a photo of her!

My vets did this my border terrier went off her food kept hiding then looking at her tummy and crying, i took her and they said they would keep her over night and in the morning do tests etc, i asked who was with her they said no-one so i kepty her at home and slept on the sofa with her, so glad i did as whilst on the operating table the next day she was pts, she had eaten a dishcloth and it had perforated her intestines. RIP my poor girl Stitch x x
So glad your baby was ok x x

omg that is disgracefull ,puppies need feeding alot ,did they not take ant blood or anything ,,i bet your glad you asked ,these could have been one of those vets that were on that programme about the way vets behave behing the scenes with your pets ,,i for one are not very trusting ,,my cat went in for a spay she was a friendly cuddly cat when she went in ,,when she came home she was like a tiger ,she would scratch people so hard it left scars ,,i hope she is all better now ,,no thatnks to the money grabbers
