I have a German Shepard who is eating his tail! He has chewed off all of the fur & it is bleeding. It smells awful & must be hurting him. When he is chewing it, he cries because it hurts, but he doesn't stop. We have tried putting VetWrap on it & normal bandages but he just chews through them. We have also tried putting one of those lamp shade collar things on him (Sorry, don't know what it is called! Haha) but he just started chewing his sides. I thought it was stress/nerves over something, but he has been doing it for a while so I don't think it is. Does anyone know why he is doing this & how to stop it? Thanks in advance

It sounds like something my friends dog had......................................''Anal furunculosis (or perianal fistulas) are deep unsightly sinuses that track through the skin, sometimes with flat open areas of ulceration. They are usually confined to the skin around the anus, but in severe cases they can spread as far as the flanks and run down the inside of the hindlegs. Technically they are NOT fistulas because they course only within the skin and do not open into another organ. Although they are near the anal sacs (scent glands) the sinuses do not connect with them, nor do they connect with the rectum or colon.''
Apparently GSDs can be prone to it......

Definately needs his anal glands checking. That would acount for the smell as well, take him to the vet asap and get them emptied and poss antibiotics as they may be infected.

Get his his anal glands checked, but he could also be allergic to something? We had a border terrier who used to do this, the same spot & side. Turns out she is allergic to basically everything to do with grass and flowers ect! We have 'rehomed' her to a friend, she is now on antibiotics and steriods and is fine (Bit fat though!)

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his Tongue.

vet ASAP.. if it is Anal furunculosis and these go wrong, its is seriosuly unpleasant and they end up having fistulas in their back passage...worse case scenario is having the dog PTS...
