My mare is fully vaccinated but was told to bring her July vac forward to a few weeks before she's due so that the foal is also covered. She's due in May so wouldn't be much earlier but when I spoke to the vet she said there was no need as she's already covered so so is the foal.
So i was reading a magazine today which said I should vaccinate 8-12 weeks before foaling??
Which is correct?? Or what do you do?

Mine are all just vaccinated on their routine dates, if the mare is fully vaccinated the foal will still be covered. When it comes to the foal on my vets advice I dont usually vaccinate my foals until around 8 months old as they will be covered until that time by what they received from the mare. I'm sure some people will do that differently - and I know a local vet that advises people to vaccinate their foals from 4 months old - but as all my mares are covered for flu + tet I'm happy to go with my vet's advice.

Thanks, there so much conflicting advise you sometimes wonder which is the right thing to do.
So If my mare is due in July is she fine to still have her booster even thought she will have foal at foot just 4 weeks old probably?

So If my mare is due in July is she fine to still have her booster even thought she will have foal at foot just 4 weeks old probably? She will be fine to have her normal vac at that point, unless you know your mare has a reaction to the vac they can be done at pretty much anytime, if she was prone I would certainly ask the vets advise before doing anything though. Our vets will not vaccinate foals before 6 months old as they say the vaccines will not cover before that point, due to some new vaccine types now used, so I would ask the vet to be completely certain before starting any foals on their courses.

Thanks Holiday. I wouldn't want foal vaccinating just my mare.
