My collie x ( could be with anything but I think he has spaniel and lab in him) has recently been stiff behind. He's about 9 yrs old ( we don't have exact details as the dogs are both rescue animals). I put this down to age etc however he has just started losing a little weight only on his back end and ever so slightly dipping. He is still running around all day but not sure whether a trip to the vet would be worth it or not?
I know labs quite often have back end problems, is this similar?

I would definately advise popping him to the vets. Being a collie x there could be a chance he has a bit of hip displasia, which is causing artheritis to set in earlier. He might just need some pain relief to help. Is he worse in the evening, or after a lot of exercise? Most collies and collie x don't like to admit they have weakness anywhere and will carry on as normal, despite any pain. They don't like to show it. You can also give him things like glucosamine capsules to help. Hope you find out what is going on soon.

thanks for your reply wiccaweys, he isn't any worse in the evening, it seems to be pretty much the same all day, but as you state he acts as if nothing is bothering him. I keep considering leaving him at home to rest but then he goes beserk as soon as he sees me put my coat on and I haven't got the heart! I did wonder about some sort of 'lubricant' tablet but wasn't sure about which, I take it glucosamine is for humans and you can buy it off the shelf? I will definately mention it to the vet he's just a little 'sharp' when the vet messes with him so sometimes getting a true idea of what's wrong is difficult, (he's not a nasty dog he just doesn't like being messed with by strangers). Thanks
