My friend has a mare, due in 6 weeks.
Today mare is lying on floor groaning, stomach contracting, foal going beserk inside, she is now standing and keeps lifting her tail, her udder has filled up overnight and teats rock hard.
Vet has been called but any ideas?

Thanks all. Vet cane and said she is showing all signs of labour! Apparently the next 36 hours are important and we all all hoping she crosses her legs and forgets about it. 6 weeks is early! Mare is more settled now but tummy still contracting. My friend is sleeping outside her stable. So fingers crossed she hangs on for a few more weeks!
Thanks for your concern. Will keep you posted

Happy to help

Hopefully all is fine, the warm weather yesterday has made it quite uncomfortable for some mares, our friends also thought they had a mare aborting who was showing all signs of the above (after speaking to her this morning) but it seems the sudden warm weather had over heated her. Everything is crossed for your friend xxxxxxxxxx

Mare still restless today.
She is looking for a foaling alarm is anyone in north east has one. I find them a nightmare constantly going off!

More developments!
The mare is constantly up and down. Eating and pooing ok. She is backing her bum into a corner all the time but not rubbing. Backend looks sunken and almost sound like she is tucked up. Back legs all soaked this morning.
Its hard to establish mush over the phone so think I will make trip over tonight to see for myself what's going on.

Do you think it sounds like she is in labour holiday? 6 weeks is very early!
Congratulations on your foal!

I would get the vet back out (a good horse vet). I would be concerned that there is something wrong, maybe foal is in the wrong position. We have had this happen to us and our mare was showing similar symptoms. Hope I'm wrong! Please keep us posted. Selina

hope all is ok but it does sound like there is a labour going on........ we just had a mare abort twins with 12 weeks to go no signs of problems brought her in as usual by 6.30pm she had eaten her supper and most of her hay then by 10 pm she had given birth to them!!!! breeding is rewarding and heartbreaking! Good luck with the mare i hope the foaling goes ok, we have had foals over 5 weeks early with no problems. Fingers crossed!

I have been through to see her tonight and I think all is ok. Mare is big but not dropped or slackened off at all and milk bags tiny. I think she is uncomfortable, but if she was mine I wouldn't be worried. Foal is quite active but think mare seems quite settled now.
She didn't look like she was in labour or showing signs to me.
Can't think why foal would suddenly be so active over past few days though

it sounds to me that the foal is positioning its self ready for the birth ,,one of my mares was very simalar the foal was very agitated and then went over

Fingers crossed she will be ok, especially if she hasnt slackened or developed a bigger bag. Personally I feel if the foal had moved into the "birthing canal" in presentation for imient birth there wouldnt be room for it to move about as much as has been mentioned - however only my own theory with nothing else to back that up!!!!!!! Good luck hopefully baby just moving into a different position and lying on a nerve and making mum uncomfortable xxx

If it's any reassurance my mare does exactly the same about 4 weeks before foaling. The first time I thought she was also foaling (she showed every sympton of foaling/colic without a foal or actual colic).Rolling, groaning, rubbing tail, etc. As advised above I think it could be foal getting ready for the big exit. I do hope this is the case. Please keep us informed.
