Maybe the 12month old is trying to become the dominent one of the two, 8 isnt particularly old but maybe the younger one is getting a bit big for himself and wanting to be the boss. Im assuming the 12 month old is a bit bigger than the collie.
Put a mussle on them both, just a suggestion, then that way your not going to get seriously hurt while you try and figure out what is causing the problem.

Are they the same sex? I have a rotti and used to have a mastif x they are bit*hes. They where best friends and played well together untill one day they had a massive fight and my dobbi got caught in the middle, he actually came off worse poor might. anyway we went to dog training classes with both girls and things really turned round thought all was sorted then came home one day - blood everywhere and my two girls ripped to bits, the vet said I was lucky they didn't fight to the death. Got both girls sorted at vets after weeks of treatment. My mastif cross went to live with my father in law.
I think it depends on how bad your dogs are fighting you could try training, I expect like my two they are having issues with the pecking order, Jade was my first dog and kia came in much later but wanted to be above Jade and I knew Jade would not have that so in the end had to make best decision for them both.
Good luck, def advise not to leave them unsupervised!!

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his Tongue.

It sounds like the younger one is now trying to be the dominant pack leader... I would castrate if not already done so... you also need to regain the pack leader status as yourself...I agree with teri, never leave them alone.. good luck

Dazy that is what I was going to say. If they are both entire males I would get the younger one castrated.

I would try getting some advice from wither a very good trainer or a doggy psychologist/behaviour expert.. these things do happen when there is a shift in the pack dominance... its really tough..

iS the younger one isnt wanting to play with the older one and the older one isnt having any of it??? this happens with my cats i have a kitten (6 months) and a 7 year old. And the older one just snaps when she has had enough and really beats him up. This might not be the case but just another suggestion.

I have 2 that are exactly the same, mine is a dominance thing, definately get a dog behaviourist to assess both dogs it is difficult to say what is going on without seeing the 2 together and looking at their body language.Never leave these dogs together until these issues have been addressed. What area are you in? I will see what behaviourist is local to you and maybe you can ring them for a chat.Personally I think it is the only way forward for you if you don't have the experience to tackle the problem yourself. If it saves one of your dogs and means they can live happily together then I think it is money well spent.Good luck!!!

If you would like to give us a call, we'd be happy to go through things with you and give you breed specific advice. Its what we do in day in day as we are a border collie rescue. BC's do think very differently to other breeds and quite often a lot of trainers and behaviourists don't understand how a collie thinks and sees the world, and by using a 'one size fits all breeds' approach, and especially the 'domiance & pack leader theory' with a collie can actually make matters worse. Tel: 07905 203254 Website is: www.wiccaweys.co.ukIf we can't answer, leave a number and we'll call you back. Its much easier to give advice person to person than via a pm or email.

above ^ fab rescue - take wiccaweys up on the offer! collies are sooo different to other breeds and they are not for everyone.. so driven to work etc and to me its criminal not to work a collie!! even if its just training and masses of walks! i did agility and obedience with mine which sorted them out mentally as i did train them daily in obedience then agility twice a week good luck

it does seem a dominant thing ,the important thing is to figure out the dominant one and stick with that ,like when the feed ghoes down give the dominant one his fist and when you give treats do the same again ,it is very important that you are dominant over them both as well ,,as then you have complete control ,,i would suggest castrating the younger one as the cross it is it can be a very dominant type ,,i have 2 castrated males one was done when he was 5 mnths and they other was after he had several litters and he is very dominant to the point of dangerous aat times but i say jump he says how high ,,but we do still have the odd fight
