Absolutely redmaddi ............ all of ours have tetanus vaccinations and anything that is going to be travelling has flu also (that is actually everything at present). At least you have the peace of mind that your horses are protected and you can compete anywhere. We have never had any reactions in over 20 years so I am definitely pro vaccinations.

Have done all of ours for years without problems except one year on a connemara did have a reaction - with the young ones I have made sure they have tetanus jabs (though unlike a lot of breeding people I know who dont jab anything!!). Just make sure you keep all your records up to date and with you, or you could be turned away from a show (The Royal) like we were last year!! (And a few others...)

Mine are all done whether they are travelling or not as I'm wary of something that has been to a show bringing something back with them.
One of my mares had a bad local reaction a few years ago - her neck and shoulder were very swollen. I think in that instance the vet was a bit quick and didn't desensitise the muscle so I now always make a point of asking for the muscle to be thumped prior to needle being inserted.
Someone on our yard has a mare who took a reaction to the actual vaccination last year - it was horrific. Mare had to go to the vet's for a week and when she came back she had a huge hole that the owner had to syringe clean twice a day - it was so big that the syringe could literally disappear in her neck while the wound was being cleaned! Vet thought that was a faulty batch of vaccines though as a few horses took a reaction at the same time - certainly the girl on our yard didn't have to pay so someone, somewhere, accepted liability.

Welshlady....
Most of the major county shows do insist that all entrants have up to date Flu / Tet. The Royal Show are very keen on it and check every passport for every horse / pony entering the event.
Other county events normally have random spot checks...so you have to make sure that you have your documentation with you for each pony....
At some shows run under FEI rules they may even specify that you have 6 monthly boosters...but I believe that most showing horses are exempt from this....
We have never had any adverse reactions to these jabs with our lot....

All of my showing ponies have Flu & Tet, the breeding stock has Tet as these are kept away from the showing ponies & to be perfectly honest it is now such a huge expense to have them done for Flu, that it is purely cost prohibitive. I do however have exceptions to this rule which brings me to the above quote. I have two older brood mares who have never had any sort of injection for either Flu or Tet & our stud vet wouldn't jab them for Tet as he considered the risk of a reaction to high.

I have one pony who had a very bad reaction to flu and tet so she has nothing at all and we can't take her to some shows. Like enthusiast I have flu nad tet for showing ones and tet for others. It does cost a fortune to give them all everything. I have only ever had cert. checked at Royal Show.
