I personally do not send my mares away to stud and will AI as much as possible as I do not like them away from home but of course that is personal preference.
However I would look to send a mare to a stud who is not overweight as this can cause conception problems, and who is fit and healthy. I would have a breeding check done by the vet before hand to see if there were any problems that she would be unable to breed and therefore wasting money sending her in the first place. At this check she could have any swabs taken that are needed by the stud.
I would choose the stud very carefully, visiting and looking closely at how the horses were kept, are they in herds? turned out? kept in? covered via AI, in hand or run out with the stallion?, am I happy with this system? Is the stud happy and able to deal with any special needs of my mare?
She should go with a well fitting headcollar and a rug if absolutely necessary with everything labeled clearly. Stud are notoriously busy in the breeding times and it is easy for them to misplace items that are not clearly marked. So from that point of view I would say less is best!!!!
Ask how the stud want to be contacted, via phone, e mail etc, again they are very busy people and often do not have time to chat to owners daily, but will have times in the day where they can let you know how your mare is or any updates on her as the come along.
Find out charges, how often they have a vet available for scanning and there charges and also what terms the stallion is on.

My mare went to stud. Was in her own paddock and I paid extra for a vet package. She was away for 12 weeks as 1st two attempts failed. I visited whenever I wanted but it was a fair trip so only went every other week. Now i'm waiting for my foal......11 weeks to go.

We were very lucky the last time I took my mare to stud as it was a 24 hour visit. She was scanned regularly to check where her cycle was and then it was timed to perfection for us to travel 150 miles, get her covered that night, again the next day and home again!

I'm afraid when sending them away, which is very rare now, I'm very low tech! They only go to people I know and trust, will go wormed and foot trimmed and normally put out in the field with the stallion to get on with it! Ideally I like them to stay until they have passed their 6 weeks, one can normally but not always tell if they have turned and been re-covered. My own boy ran out last year with four mares, three from early on and the maiden covered later in hand to start with, and I saw no signs whatsoever of any activity so did have them all scanned to make sure he was actually doing his stuff. I needn't have worried - the first three all done and dusted in the first week he was out with them so due a bit earlier than I really like them to be!
I'm certainly not anti technology as the Ds usually get AI'd with frozen semen but under my jurisdiction and so far at the vet hospital.

I usually send my mares away for stud, i think something to also remember is that the stud does expect you to have your mare swabbed and certs produced before they use their stallion on your mare but you are also entitled to see the ones from the stallion also.

My mare is being AI'd this year and as she was covered naturally last year (and sadly absorbed) I have had her swabbed and vet checked today. Fingers crossed for good results. x

No she went to a stud in Staffordshire called Bazaars Stud. She went au natural with the stallion in-hand. Only the real thing for her and she liked it so much she wanted more 2 more!!

I took my mare to Twemlows as it was her first time (and mine) and wanted to make sure all went as well as possible … we AI’d her and she took first time (luckily) – she stayed there until her heartbeat scan (which was lucky as she’d produced two and one had to be popped at 14 days) … she’s now 8 months and we have a very wiggly baby cooking! x

my maiden mare had a pre pregnancy check and bloods taken yesterday as she is off to twemlows at some point this month, we are in north Yorkshire/Cumbria so its quite a distance from us but as we are using frozen semen I thought it better to be with a stud and people who I can trust to not only look after my mare brilliantly but also who I know has the needed experience to do the insemination. I have paid the stallions stud fees in full so just waiting for the blood results then she is off down there. im really nervous but also a little excited!! good luck to all owners who have mares foaling and also to those who's mares are being put in foal! xx
