Last night Toffee, one of our hand reared feral cats, came limping into the lounge. He was clearly in a lot of pain, as he lay there growling (not that that in itself is unusual though) and we could see that his paw did not look right. It looked as though he had dislocated his toes.
A phone call to the vets meant that we had to take him to the surgery (11pm). Firstly we had to get Toffee from his hiding hole in the climbing tower, no easy feat as even OH refused to put his hand in there. We had to tip him out carefully.
At the vets the vet said that we had done the right thing bringing him in straightaway, rather than waiting until morning. He said that he could feel a lot on crunching and that the toe was probably fractures and dislocated, and that if it couldn't be put back properly, they might need to amputate the toe. We left Toffee there and have to phone later on this afternoon to see what the situation is.

Well done for taking him in straight away, I am sure it will mean his recovery will be much speedier. Let us know? xx

Toffee is now back home. He had dislocated a toe but thankfully there was no fracture. He is confined to the house for 3 days and has a bandage on which he is trying hard to remove. It is already driving me nuts as he hates being shut in, is attacking the door flaps and we have had to shut the dogs flap as well, so they aren't happy. I'm told he was very meek whilst in the vets, I'm sure they never believe me when I tell them he is a little savage who would as soon rip your arm off as be picked up. All I can say is it is going to be the longest 3 days on record. Oh and we are £196 lighter as well. It did raise the question of just how much are we able or willing to spend on these feral cats if they get sick. I just wish we lived near a PDSA or RSPCA hospital so that at least the costs would be a bit better for us. Got to go as I can hear somebody head butting the door flap!!

Toffee is not at all happy being confined to the house. He woke me up at 4.30 this morning when I heard him jumping onto the door handle, trying to open the door. He has been in all the windows to see if any are open and tried digging through the cat flaps. Here is a picture of him on his tower, looking at the outside world.

Toffee has been to the vets today and had his bandages removed, although he had started that job himself.
He is allowed out now but must take it carefully until the ligaments etc have time to settle down!
We brought him home and let him out of the basket as soon as we got out of the car, knowing that he has been desperate to get out for the past few days.
What did he do but head straight for his flap and come in, then go out and come back in again, as if to check that his freedom had been returned. Eventually, he went up to the yard to spend time with his mother and brother asleep in their stable.

Great, here we go again. Got up this morning to find that Toffee has done the same thing to his other hind foot!!
Another bloody great vets bill. I wish we had a PDSA or RSPCA Hospital or similar near us.
