lrh he did give it a few long, hard looks and I thought the terrier was going to be top two too.
I thought the champion and reserve did shine. I liked the reserve best but yes, what a happy dog the winner was. Nice to see a nine year old win too. The reserve's time will come.
I'm just glad a poodle didn't win it.

that poodle really moved it powered through from its back end, but it was a totally deserved win for the flat coated and that bassett verdeen deserved her placing

Well I didn't go into labour in the ring!!!! Only took my black pug in the end (I had to compromise with OH in order to go). Lily went fab, she excels in a big ring as she isn't a stuffy pug and moves for fun. Anyway, judge wasn't a black pug person. We were aware of this but you have to be in it don't you?? But it was apparent that from approx 280 entries only 3 black pugs made the line up all day!!!! Never mind we had a good day out. Loved the flat coat, it deserved it all the way, it absolutely owned the ring from the moment it stepped on the carpet. So. That's it for another year. We have it all to do again now (fortunately my girl has qualified for life)
Interesting comment regarding hugging judges - dog showing is slightly different to ponies and believe me when you get that elusive ticket you just want to hug anyone whether you know them or not. Yes some do know each other but I can assure you that this is quite common practice and not nose rubbing

The flat coat was fantastic he showed himself brilliantly, in my eyes he had it won after the first go round, the runner up the basset also moved very well, they were both clear winners in my eyes, I did love the fox terrier and he was my favorite but I thought that he lacked sparkle in the ring.

I don't like the VERY droopy quarters that seems to be the thing for GSDs currently. Being a practical lady I'm all for long term soundness! There was one like that in our dog training class, only about 2yo but couldn't even jump into the owner's car, she had to put a ramp up for her to walk up. Sorry if I offend you but there it is.

from what I have been told today crufts is as political as horse showing. Even though I think the winner and the reserve were worthy winners, this is some of the gossip from behind the scenes. A lot of the poodles were taken for testing to check if any hair spray or gel were used on there coats, as this is a complete no no ( Thank god that doesn't happen with ponies we would all be kicked out the ring). There are arguments with the GSD Society and the Kennel Club about the roaching in their backs is over emphasized. I did not think that this one was as bad as some I have seen but I did notice the judge run his hands over its back a good few times. And the lady with the Boxer did herself no favors when interviewed by Claire Balding by saying that it fights with their other Boxer dog so they have to be careful to keep them well separated and it kills cats, could you imagine what the national papers would have said if that had won.
So their you go guys pick the bones out of that lot.

All dog showing is political not just crufts. Far more political than ponies. In the pug classes there were only 3 blacks placed all day and they were token placings. Don't get me wrong I liked best of breed but I've never seen the people in the pug ring before or heard of their dog!! Any kind of dye or sprays at any show are a no no. Some people frown on coat conditioners even so again not just crufts and regarding the GSD society falling out with the kennel club again, it's not just them. There are several breeds, pugs included which the kennel club have chosen as having serious health issues and are putting in place a vetting to any best of breed winner to ensure they meet the health welfare standards. This to me now defeats the object of having a judge. If a judge thinks it's a worthy winner the vet may not!!!!! Barmy.
I didn't see the interview with the boxer owner, probably not the most sensible of things for her to say but then if she was caught up in the moment she probably just burbled!!

Sounds more as if she did the Boxer breed in general no favours halfpass!
I loved the top two, both husband and I picked out the flatcoat as our favourite, we aren't into dog showing but it had such obvious presence and star quality.
What would us pony people do without hair gel? Although I'd be happy to see pony makeup banned, I so hate panda eyes.

I too didnt like the "shape" of the GSD. Hair sprays and makeup have always been a no no in dog showing although my breed ( Boxers ) dont really need hair spray!! I did think at the time when the Boxer owner was interviewed that she wasn't putting the breed in a good light, especially to the public and to those who have no knowledge of the breed!!! They are a very fiesty breed who make wonderful family pets for the right families

Yes we have one bit*h, we hope to show her but are very new to the showing world and she is only 7 months so would be great to know if there are any ring craft classes in the south or any practice shows we could do before trying the championship classes.

If you give me an idea of the area you are in I will try to put you in touch with some Boston peeps near you. Also if you google for canine societies in and around your area and ring the secretaries they should be able to help with ring craft. At 7 months your girl is ready to be out in the ring. How is she bred??

from what I have been told today crufts is as political as horse showing. From my limited experience of it years ago it's a lot worse. I showed a young bulldog then, and have to say I did find the bulldog people a nice lot. The same year I travelled round with a friend with a poodle, and the poodle fraternity were utter hell- there wasn't any camaraderie between them and a great deal of "politics". A year of it was enough for me- I thought afterwards and since that the dog showing world makes the horse showing world look positively saintly.

We show poodles (mins and toys) and i have found the people nothing but polite with great camaraderie between them and only to pleased to help. Dont get me wrong they're are the normal sticks in the mud but hey its showing it goes with the territory but on the whole they are a great bunch of people.
