Does anyone on here have dogs that live soley outside? (e.g. in a pen/run).
I know of a few farmers etc who have dogs that live outside with access to a kennel but was wondering how common this is. Also, do any of you have dogs at your stables/yard but you don't live on site?
BTW, I have had dogs before and know how to look after them, but they've always been house pets.
Thanks

We have dogs who live at our yard and i dont live on site. I have always had house dogs and i hate leaving them each night. They have a 10x6 kennel then a 15ft run in front which is all under cover. When me and the oh eventually move out of our parents and have somewere of our own we will bring the dogs home. At the minute the oh lives with his parents who are terrified of dogs and i live with my mum with 2 other dogs and 3 cats. One of our dogs was a prison dog so he only likes myself and the oh so bringing him home to stay could be a bit of a problem.

we have four collies who live outside, OH built them a 'kennel' and run, the 'kennel' is about 10' by 12', has a raised sleeping platform, and two doors - one a person can walk in from the outside, and a small door that goes up and down on a pulley which goes into the run, which is about 12' by 18', the run also has a door to the outside, and in the run is a little kennel which they like to lie in during the day. they are very happy dogs! These pics aren't great, but they give you an idea:

iv got some that live indoors and some that are kept in kennels at night, the kennelled ones that i have been getting into dog showing with have never been indoor dogs , have two brick rooms with a covered coridor with doors each end that is attatched to house with lights, heat lamps, full shavings beds with another bed in corner, radio left on when im out so they dont bark every time they hear a noise, and fully alarmed for piece of mind, there like mini stables really

All ours live outside too, and have cosy shelter, food and water and exercise and lots of cuddles, and are happy dogs. It is a lot more natural to them than living in a warm house.

2 of my dogs live outside, whatever the weather! The big old border collie is free to roam about where ever he likes (we live on a 800 acre farm), all day and all night. Never goes any further than the little bridge on my drive. He's done this since he was a puppy! He has access to the stables and his big kennel if he wants them, but he prefers to sleep outside on the gravel for some reason! Lol. Our other little terrier on the other hand, runs off! He is kept on a long lunge rope for most of the day, taken for a walk then locked up into his kennel at night as the border collie seems to get a bit agressive over food. They always have food, fresh water and fresh air! They seem to love it, best way for a dog I think!
