We never had a lead-rein pony when my daughter was that young - she rode at a trekking centre & never went on a lead. We have, however, just started a lead rein pony we have owned since he was 6 months old. He's never had side reins on. He was sat on 7 times before he hunted (for an hour only as not fit) with an 8 year old. 2 weeks later, my daughter (22) took him SJ - lead him round the course in a headcollar (never seen jumps before)- then won one class & placed in 2nd. 2 weeks later did a lead rein Hunter trials (4th) then went round off lead with 8 year old & did pairs class too. 2 weeks later 2nd lead rein workers & qualified SWPA Champs. He works beautifully in an outline for the 8 year old, and has not been schooled or even ridden between these events. He's never going to be a world beater, but I'd rather have a pony who wants to do it than the 'production line' ponies we see in the shows - beautiful they may be, but fun?

There are 3 lead rein ponies in our livery yard and not a one has had side reins on ever!.. our little LR pony has been led by the dad, and rode by my little girl since the age of 3 she competed at her first show just before her 4 th birthday and has had 4 yrs of lead rein and is now doing first yr first ridden...Arri come home with ribbons all the time.. and i mean all the time... he does not work in an outline on the lead rein, but is getting the hang of it now my little un is getting bigger and understands how to ride him better, she has weekly private lessons with dad leading until she was able to come of the lead at home... she can ride round the country park, pops small logs/jumps canters on the mud paths does handy pony, beginnners riding club pony LR and begginner WHP classes... the judges fr of the ponyequently comment on his temperment and that he is a splendid childs pony.. yeah he not got the best trot, but he is totally safe for any jockey. On the other side of the coin one of the other LR ponies on the yard, has natural self carriage in both walk and trot, forwrd going and looks lovely a picture... however she has many a times been commented on that he is too sharp for a lead rein pony!!. Judges attutudes have change and a lot of them now go of the suitabilty of a lead rein pony rather than the prettiness and floating paces.. that trot like they are doing an " inhand class".. We compete mostly riding club level, but have been placed at several qualifiers, incl NCPA POYS where the judge went of the suitabilty of the pony, and chose those that had simple snaffles over those with wilkie type bits!! and the nose tucked in.

Depends on each pony. Is there any chance it will kick you. Do you need to carry a whip, if so how long a whip.
My section a pony I stand only about 2 foot behind him because I know he won't kick me. Also he is really responsive to my positioning so when I need to step to the side for corners, leg yield etc I don't have to move much. I don't need a whip as he is so good with voice.
My section c on the other hand is a bit funny about things behind him, not sure if his sight is a bit iffy in one eye so I would stand a bit further back and move outwards much more. I probably would carry a driving whip with him so would stand about the length of that behind him.

Hi, I read all this post last night and decided to lunge our LR pony in the Pesoa today. She did not like it at all, she didn't like the part under her tail and did lots of very big bucks! I'm thinking I might not bother with the pesoa again.
My daughter is 3 and the pony has been a first ridden, so I want to teach the pony to do LR without my daughter on. I don't want to use side reins but do want her to be in an outline when I work her. Is this possible?
Any suggestions welcome.
