My lab had 5 puppies on monday morning. Its her first litter and she is doing really well with the puppies and turing into a lovely mum! Problem is she is not eating very well at all, which as all you lab owners know is VERY strange!! Have tried her with the lot, chicken , tuna, v expensive dog pouches. I managed to persuade her to eat a cornish pasty today, but i had to pretend i was eating it as well (get the picture) Her temp is back to normal and has no nasty discharge so all seems well. I have never bred labs before and have allways found with the JRTs they are back on the grub asap !! Am i just worrying over nothing? Would be greatful for any advice.

Bread and milk is usually a nice easy thing for them to eat, as well as a raw egg beaten in now and then. This gives them a good supply of protein etc. If she takes much longer talk to your vet as her milk flow will slow down- though with only five puppies they wont take as much out of her as a big litter.

My GSD was always fussy with her food even before she had a litter but when she had her litter it got very bad! It wasnt until around 3 days after the litter was born she began to eat!
I found that feeding little & often with puppy food made her most content and I knew that even if she didn't eat her full adult daily amount then the extra protein in the puppies food kept her going until her next small meal!
Hope that helps! x

aww bless her xx i did scramble egg for my Lillian when she had her babies, sometimes with a tiny bit of puppy milk mixed into it ( from tesco) I guess if everything is ok with her and she is feeding her babies leave her and dont fuss her to much. I can remember Lilly not wanting to leave her babies, i had to pick her up from her bed and carry her outside to go to the toilet, she eventually ate when she was ready and relaxed at being a new mum. If its her first litter she is probably overwhelmed Don't know if it was the correct thing to do but i hand fed her whilst she was with her babies and offered water whilst she was in her bed. But it worked for us, i also left food out for her so she could ad lib, but she just didn't want to leave her babies. I think from what i can remember after 3-4 days Lilly started to venture out and eat more. xx
