Some may have seen my previous thread about my Rottweiler Jade. She has been diagnosed with Cancer and it spread to her liver. The problem is she has to have lots of tablets, and she is a nightmare taking them.
Started putting them in cheese, then last week she discovered a tablet in the cheese so will no longer take them in cheese. In fact she is suspicious of everything I give her. Using Pate at the moment and that sometimes works, also occasionally a bit of mars bar when she won’t take anything else. Any ideas of a nice food that I can easily hide the tablets in?? Bearing in minds she will seriously inspect it before eating, so ham out of question as she just unrolls it and finds the evil tablet!
Also she won't eat any food other than chicken for her dinner, she won’t eat any dog food, tried mince, sausage, liver, rice mixed with chicken, but all she will eat is a little chicken and I am so worried she will start loosing weight soon. So any ideas of dinner food also really appreciate
Thanks Guys

does she like fish? If she does something like pilchards might help as they are smelly and she wouldn't be able to smell tablets
My old dog loved fish fingers too.

Good plan, could try pilchards and maybe tuna!! would only work for dinners as she would pick through it an find tablets, thats why cheese was good as could make it soft and mould it around the tablet. but great idea for trying to get her to eat something, Thank you ;D

You could try some small fresh fish (like whitebait) and hide them inside the cavity? Good luck

My Dachshund came from a breeder who boils chicken and as a puppy, she would only eat chicken. Her palate is broadening, but she still has chicken as her main meal. I roast it as I can't cope with the smell of boiled!
Anyone who knows her will vouch for the fact that she looks very well on chicken, so don't worry. She prefers all the underside, skin, gungy bits and humans have the breast meat. I strip it bare.
Does Jade have a sweet tooth? My OH (who's very ill) is administered daily, 13 different sorts of medication covertly (just as you are doing) - grapes/tiny jam doughnuts/snowballs/mini swiss rolls/icecream with hundreds & thousands in - (crush the tablets) - that horrid strawberry squirty stuff which goes on ice cream......... you get the gist!
Cream cheese?
And, pretend to eat it yourself, first. I had to do that with a cushingoid & diabetic Daxi..... ie: make out it's your food - and isn't she lucky to have some of it!

Are you allowed to crush the tablets before giving them to her?if you are that makes it a bit easier to disguise them. Will she try Marmite or garlic? they are great for hiding the "smell" of tablets. Will she catch food sometimes they swallow the "treat" when it is thrown and the tablet goes dowm before they realise.

She is just so difficult, my dobbie will eat anything and he will just swallow it whole! But Jade has always been a proper lady, she will take her treat, what ever it maybe, away have a good sniff, to make sure it's not poisioned and then chew up every little bit. So adding the tablets, soon as she starts chewing she knows they are in there and she spits them out. every time she discovers something has a tablet in it, she is even more cautious the next time!! will try the cream cheese sounds like a good idea! I always pretend to eat it too , and also give her some with and some without so that i can take the bits without and give one to tyler, she then guards the rest and if I leave her alone she will sometimes eat it! just have to be carrful with her chemo tablets in case tyler got hold of it!

Can't crush the chemo tablets, did take the powder out of her painkillers and mixed with gravey, squirted down her throat and thought She was going to die, she started frothing at the mouth and going mad. Only got a tiny bit in her mouth too, vet said the pain killers have such bad taste nothing would disguise the taste, hence they come in capsule form! Poor girl really thought I had damaged her!!

really silly but my dog loves carrots, its a suggestion. hope she is doin ok teri x No she wont eat carrots either Thank you loulabelle, she had a bad day tuesday, thought it was the end of her She had sprained her good leg and her back legs totally gave way, hubby had to carry her in and out of house to go to toilet. Took her to vets next day and she was walking a little, he said it may happen again as she is really relying on that good leg as her back ones have the dysplacia, poor girl, thank god I never went for the amputation, that really would have been the end! Then today took her to the yard and she jumped into the back of the jeep all on her own! Couldn't belive it I always have to lift her even before the cancer, due to her back legs!! Amazing

Could you get/would she tolerate, a pill giver. They are a long plastic tube with a plunger and a soft rubber end. You stick the pill in the end slip it to the back of her mouth and press the plunger. Bingo all done in a matter of seconds(always supposing she doesn;t get too stressed with the thing but if she doesn't they are brilliant)

I must admit I use one of those for my cat because you have to make sure they get the pill. Maybe could give her a reward after. Also make sure you wear gloves when you are handling those powerful drugs, you don't want any residue going anywhere else.

Don't give her the tablets in grapes, they're poisonous for dogs! Apparently just 4 can kill a dog!

Its funny how different animals are my cat blue is fine with this method, but my cat alfie goes mad and will ignore me for days after!! Yes I do have gloves for the tablets, must say I am not as careful as I should be, As it is almost a surgical proceedure hiding them in her treats I don't usually wear gloves when handling them, very niave but how dangerous are they to handle??

Will she eat Bakers complete dog food? I found mine when off his food would always eat that, failing that a bit of weetabix or porridge, ready brek type thing just to have something in his tummy. I have same problem with tablets, I'm afraid. Tried cheese, ham, beef did work wrapped around the tablet but only a couple times, cake, jam sandwiches. My dog is one that will eat anything whole but knew instantly that these 'treats' were tampered with. Do you have children/child? My dog will take ANYTHING from my little girl as he thinks he sharing with her, so I resorted to making out I was doing her pack up sandwiches and then putting it in the crusts, she always gives him the crusts anyway so he sits waiting, it so far, touch wood, has worked.
Good luck, it's no fun and so worrying X

I read this too only recently, My dobbie used to eat them by the bunch and he is still here at the ripe old age of 12, he also has the occasional choccy bikki, maybe he has guts of iron. I do wonder tho how they come up with these things, surly tyler would be a gonna by now with the amount of things he should not have eaten!!

I have one who inspects everything for poisonous tablets! we use pate and brie. I have to be really careful that the tablet is completely wrapped though otherwise she rejects it, eats the pate or brie off it and then refuses further titbits! we also play catch the sausage pieces and after 2 or 3 we chuck the 'poisoned' one which usually goes down ok! I found fish very messy and fiddly and inevitably the tablet fell out. Cat food is very good where all else fails though - again you have to mould it round the cat food. the supermeat variety is best

Can you talk to your vet to see of any of the drugs can be changed to liquid form. I know that there is a liquid painkiller (Metacam I think) but obviously I don't know the strengths are needed. If you try something like whitebait I wouldn't cook it - give it raw and put the tablet inside. It must be a nightmare for you trying to get her medication down. Those 'pill poppers' are good but it is normally a two person job and, obviously, you don't want to stress her. I think you said she eats chicken - try cutting a pocket into a meaty piece (uncooked) and conceal the tablet in there. I am sure it is going to be a lot of trial and error. I wish you lots of luck with Jade. Enjoy the time you have got.

Just had another thought - are any of the drugs available in injection form (if you felt you could do that). I would talk to you vet.

Teri I must confess I don't know the scientific facts as to how powerful the chemo drugs are. Imagine though, these kill cancer and other cells, so they do need to be pretty powerful. Even if they are covered with that sugar coating stuff and are not powdery, you are sticking them in wet things. Any transfer to your skin could be harmful and then if you inadvertently prepare food or put your finger to your mouth.
I definitely think you ought to be extremely careful and if anything over cautious. Get some close fitting gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after each dose. Obviously keep the drugs in a secure place.
Surprised the vet didn't give you guidance notes.

On the tv program "It's me or the Dog" there was a dog that wouldn't eat food unless it was sat ON the table, and the food was chewed by the owner, taken out of her mouth and then fed to the dog!
The long of the short of it was, they got it to eat it by cooking the food in the frying pan, with the dog nearby, it makes it very smelly and that seems to make them more hungry, and want to eat it more. If you did this with the food and then hid the pill inside it, she might be more keen to eat it!
just an idea, good luck

Thank you ladywell, She is actually already on Metacam for her back legs, getting to the piont where not too worried about the pain killers as I know she has her metacam and to be honest she doesn't seem to be in pain when she won't take the pain killers, the problem is the chemo drug, that only comes in tablet form and you have to handle it wearing gloves etc, so cant even take the power out of the pill. Will try the raw chicken, never realised you could feed it raw!! - stupid me. Thank you xx

Thanks S&O they are in a capsual form so powder all contained, vet did give me gloves and told me not to handle them, I will get some proper close fitting gloves as you suggest and be more careful. So worried about her I don't think of the consequence for myself!! xx

Hi Teri Perhaps you could try hiding the tablets in green tripe that you usually get in pet shops. Its smelly but dogs usually like eating it
Good luck x
