So... a shetland stallion turned up at the entrance to our yard a few days ago, it has apparently been roaming around the area for about a week, sometimes on the road, sometimes in a nearby field.
I have put it in our small paddock and given him water, put signs up and told the police.
A man called almost straight away claiming the pony and said he'd come and collect it, I told him he'd need to call me to meet him and let him get the pony out as teh gate is locked up. (He did ask how much I wanted to keep it on the field, but I told him that wasn't my decision)
It's been three days and he's not collected the pony even though I have sent him two messages.
A lady close by has told us that we may struggle as this happens alot apparently...
Don't get me wrong all may be ok and he might turn up soon but I'm just wondering what happens if he doesn't? I can't imagine the RSPCA or police will help...
The pony is in good condition but a little fat!
He's fine with me at the moment (as long as he's not near my gelding as they don't seem to like each other) but I can't keep him for too long as being a stallion he is quite a handful and we also have mares coming back to our yard soon!
Any ideas just in case...? Also, anything I need to know about stallions?
Thanks in advance x

I know that's what I am thinking... so what would you do?
I haven't the heart to turf him out (like others must have done)
Poor thing x

Give him a deadline to collect the pony otherwise you will start charging him for grazing and will advertise the pony and sell it to recover outstanding livery fees.

I think that might be what I will have to do... wish I had more than a mobile number though, I don't know his name or address otherwise I could tie it to his front door!
Thanks x

Google his mobile number - it may bring up details such as a for sale advert if he's sold other horses with a landline? I've had success with this before now... NB: google with and without a space after the first 5 digits as it brings up different results often..

Oh dear it gets more and more complicated. I will call the police and explain the situation so that they can up date the record just in case...
He is a cheeky thing so could imagine him trying to escape!

just googled a few different ways and nothing...
from what some people have said I'm not sure he's a typical horse man, I think this pony may be more like a pet..?

If pony has not gone by Sunday text him to say Trading Standards are coming to check all the horse passports on the yard next week and you will have to give them his phone number the penalty for no passport can be up up to £5000

No!!!
I don't know what to do now... He called Friday promised that if he didn't come on Saturday he would definately come on Sunday...well no sign today!!
I have text twice today and tried to call once but nothing.
Arghh!
The pony is no trouble, he's become very well behaved but he can't stay as we have a section a mare coming back from being a show companion very soon!
I am having to bring him in the stable at night for fear of laminitus and also so that my pony can use the field! (They don't get on and don't want to turn them out together)
Thanks for asking Snoopertrooper xx

I may have to try that... he still hasn't come or contacted me. I sent messages and tried to call yesterday as he promised he would come by Sunday.

Hi - just checked with my husband who is a retired police officer and basically you should report it to the police as found property (just as you would a purse etc) and if the owner dosn't come forward after 28 days you can technically claim the "property" but he suspects that as you have already had some contact from the owner the police MAY be able to find him and ask him to produce a passport proving ownership. If the owner comes forward after 28 days you should be able to bill him for livery / care etc - however a word of caution to transfer ownership you MAY also need to take court proceedings in the county court - whereabouts are you located as he may be able to help with a contact in the area?
