Has anyone got any experience of an old cat going deaf? It's obviously happened over a period of time, but I don't think there is much doubt now that our older cat (approx 14) has gone deaf. She's still quite bright and cheerful, but meows REALLY loudly and doesn't respond at all when she's called (I know cats don't always respond anyway, but she used to come running to jump on your knee). She doesn't go out much now anyway, and our house is along a little path so no direct threat from traffic. I don't really want to turn her into a house cat as I don't think she would be happy and it would also cause issues for our other cat (we have a cat flap) who likes to come and go at all times of the day. Not sure what my thread is about really, except trying to find out other people's experiences.

Our older cat, who is 12ish seems to have gone quite deaf. She now has a VERY loud meow and only hears you when she wants to (but thats cats for you). She also lost weight quite suddenly, but has put it back on now she is OAP dinner pouches, we have to sneak feed her or would have a riot

Thanks guys. Mine has lost a little weight but started putting it back on now - possibly fretting a little when she wondered what was happening with her hearing.
She's due a vet check soon anyway, but I am still a bit worried about whether she will come back home with us (and she hates the vet so I don't want to bring her check up forward).

Sage and Onion are brothers, both white and Sage is hearing with Onion being deaf from birth so not quite the same. Onion is rather nervous about going out no doubt due to the fact he has had a lot of frights not being able to hear what is coming behind. We leave the door open for him and he will then go out and have a little mooch and seems to feel safe, but shut the door and he is back whaling (very loudly). You must be careful not to suddenly stroke, approach from the front and even take care when shutting the door behind as the gust of air it makes sends him up in the air.
He often has a very vacant look on his face but does have great sleeps as nothing will wake him. Neither is he afraid of the hoover.
One very annoying thing though, watch your ornaments. We cannot have anything out because Onion seems to think that batting off ornaments gets him attention which, of course, it does.
Onion is very special as a result of his disability and I always seem to introduce him "this is Onion, he is deaf" for some strange reason.

Lol S&O, this particular cat has always been rather fond of attracting our attention and regularly sweeps things off the top of furniture She also rattles the blinds in the livingroom if you don't respond to her - and unfortunately that is often in the middle of the night just now

Can I just say if an elderly cat is eating well but losing weight, it might be worth getting their thyroid checked, I just put my old cat's weight loss down to her age but it was her thyroid and the tablets really made a difference to her, and gave her a lovely last couple of years.

Our neighbours cat has been deaf for a few years now, she must be about 15 now. We cat sit when she goes on holiday. She doesn't let the cat out anymore, because she can't call her back. The cat meows very loudly, and while she used to come running to the door as soon as you put your key in the lock, now you have to go and find her. Sometimes she is wandering around the house howling loudly looking for someone :-( Once she sees you she cheers right up though and still purrs and eats fine, although she has lost some weight now. I'm sure yours will be fine for a while yet :-)
