By request from the cheshire thread just how i look after my fell's mane... Ravens mane is kept plaited most of the time to stop it breaking off and then blown dried and straightened for shows!! - No quick or fun task at silly o'clock in the mornings!! He also has rugs on most the time with full necks so nothing breaks off or is bitten off when hes out playing! Its also regularly conditioned to stop it from drying out, he naturally grows alot and its very thick and has to be thinned now and again because of the weight of it... Im lucky that he does grow alot... I also use that lotion in the black container that smells gorgeous for any gaps caused by rein friction, its name fails me but i will check tonight as its outside his stable permently! (there was a thread on here about it a while ago) And as for feathers... pig oil, pig oil and pig oil!!!! Hayley x

Hairylover - what rugs do you use - I have in the past found that rugs snap the hair off at the whither and putting a neck cover on makes the mane come out with the heat

Mine all have hoods (not the detachable ones as i find these pinch the hair and pull it out) I always use a size too big as it reduces the friction, the best one i have at the moment is one of derby houses own outdoor rug.

Sorry to keep asking - does he where a stable rug all the time in the stable

No not all the time, if he hasnt got a rug on because its warm his mane can be left unplaited so it can breathe. I do occasionally leave his fly rug on overnight which has a loose mesh hood

Thanks for the info - I have 2 highlands who do not have rugs on in the stable, not sure if this helps with the mane growth - will try your suggestions though

No wouldnt say that will help grow their mane the type of rugs and hoods you use will favour wether it will be broken off or not. My boy naturally grows alot and its just a case of preventing any of it snapping off or being damaged!

Think it's from a company called Tailgator? Should come up if you google.
