Megan is very keen on driving rather than riding and a few weeks ago she got her very first driving pony – Gurnos Welsh Scrumpy Jack. Here are some photos of her with Scrumpy. She has waited very patiently to have an experienced driver come to check that his harness and borrowed cart are OK for him. Getting to know him. Our local friendly expert checking all is OK for Megans first drive The long awaited first drive – One very happy girl.

Super Pony!! I don't want to be a spoilsport but speaking from experience, please have her wear a hard hat when driving, (not just on the roads either, ) things can go wrong very quickly, even with the safest of ponies. He looks lovely, and I wish them both many many happy times ahead together.

Yes very good pony and happy little girl, may you have years of happy driving together.
Thank you cholderton for saying about how important it is to wear a hard hat when driving, as it is just the same as riding on the busy roads these days, we have to be careful when putting up photos on here as not that many people know the correct Do's and Dont's of driving, and I hope we can be helpful.

and Hi Viz for Megan and cart - you can get carriage signs from BDS online shop (or just hang a tabard off the back of cart) and wear gloves too. I do have hi-viz but must wear hat now, good reminding, thank you!

Thank you - great advice (you can tell this is new to us.)
Hi Viz jacket ordered and paid for off ebay and carriage sign from BDS. I will take Megan to buy some gloves as soon as I can and for now she can use my pimply riding ones !!
Keep the tips coming in and thank you again.

Shoes with a grippy sole, and make sure she can reach the footboard as she needs to 'brace' herself against this at all times should the pony stop suddenly, or 'baulk' at something. ( There are times when even the most reliable of ponies may do this! ;D )

Yes legs should be extended forward from the knee and the whole of the bottom of your shoe on the foot board which is rising up to the dash board and rein rail in front of you. Also every young carriage driver should be urged to hold the reins correctly, primarily for safety reasons, but it looks so elegant, and used by the experts, and we need these horsemanship skills to be learnt and carried on into the future. If you would like me to explain about rein handling ? I will later

What a super pony and a VERY happy little girl! Well done getting the harness etc fitted properly, it can make such a difference and good to know your daughter is safe. Any help or advice required just ask. Drivers tend to be very helpful and friendly.
