You know who you are... ...the selfish ones who love to walk away with the silverware & then keep it rather than returning it for the next person. ...the ones who disappoint a 6 year old child, delighted that her pony won a trophy - that never existed because it hadn't been returned. Even more so because that's now the second time it's happened to her (at 2 totally different shows). ...& I'll bet you're the ones who kick up a right fuss if any trophy you won was not returned for you to be able to collect it. Hope you feel happy every time you see that unfairly gotten silver on your shelf. How can you possibly feel proud of that??

Try and be the person chasing up the trophies from people who have changed address and phone number and dissapeared of the face of the earth.

We were once hounded to return a trophy which we never received. We did win it but the previous winner never returned it so we didn't get it. The show secretary started to get quite stroppy and it was very unpleasant. It was only that they couldn't prove I had received it as hadn't signed for it that they let the matter drop but I still think they thought I was ripping them off. It's a pity they weren't so vigilant with the previous recipient

I took over a show, never did find out who had some of the trophies as paper work in a mess! so some people were disappointed, it is very frustrating when they are not returned

Must be very dissapointing. We donated a trophy to our local pony club a few years ago. It is a memorial trophy and I would be heartbroken if it wasn't returned one year, because it means so much to us. I was the secretary of a show in the spring and although nearly every class had a trophy it was only allowed to go to members and even then we had to have a £10 deposit. There were some people who objected to the deposit, they simply didn't get the trophy.

The old silver trophies have usually been donated in someones memory, and these in my experience are the ones that the pot hunters don't want to return. We once won an old silver trophy, and went into the parade to collect it, to be told that it had not been returned!! My daughter was very disappointed. I then took it upon myself to chase the previous winner, as the trophy secretary said that she had given up!! I knew who had it, a very highly respected older lady who was a breeder/exhibitor, so I rang her and said that I would pick it up even though it was a round trip of over 100 miles. We arranged it for a certain time on a certain day, and when we got there she was not in!!!! Luckily the house was open, and the groom who knew nothing about this went into the house and took it from her sideboard and gave it to us. She knew it was the right one as it was called a name engraved onto it in someone's memory. Imagine if we had made the journey and had to come back without it. I always ensure that I have trophies engraved and returned 2 weeks at least before a show as I know how my daughter felt that day and it was a childs class. If it had been a plastic naffy one I bet that she wouldn't have wanted to keep it!!

It's a pity they weren't so vigilant with the previous recipient That does happen, I have just taken over and some of the paperwork is brief to be honest. I have managed to get most back, some which had been missing for years, but the one individual mentioned above has got it, and now the person who donated it has won it this year, they are determined to get it back. It really is a thankless task, and I must say most of our members are absolutely splendid - the Attrell family in particular, they win more in a year than I'd win in a lifetime, but Josie is totally on the ball, every single one is returned on time, cleaned and engraved, and usually with another one donated in thanks - I wish everyone was the same.

we once won a trophy and gave it back to the comittee, but the night before the presentation evening, a comitee member knocked on our door and said that they didn't have the trophy! they wouldn't leave us alone until we payed to replace the "lost trophy" when they had it all along! they still owe us £40

I won my first trophy this year (how cool am I ) and I intend to get mine & my pony's name engraved on it then proudly return it - then next year's winner will see who was 2011 Supreme Champion! It's a shame that people don't see it as a thing to be proud of for other people to see your achievement - they would rather pinch the silver themselves as an ornament... shows will stop doing trophies if it carries on which is a real shame.

Well said - I would much rather return a trophy for people to be able to see who has previously won it than keep it sitting on a shelf at home. My boy won his first trophy a couple of months ago - it's not particularly nice but am proud to be able to get his name engraved on it for people in future years to see.
