How can a pony win an Olympia qualifier yesterday - win 2 HOYS qualifying classes and then not get placed today? Makes you wonder!!!

Different judge preferring another type of that breed, pony didn't go as well, competing against different selection of ponies that performed better on the day or were of a higher standard ..........................
All perfectly valid reasons, not necessarily deeply suspicious surely?!
Perhaps the pony in question was just plain tired, if it was out yesterday as well - sometimes it's the simple obvious reasons that are overlooked.

How come - I don't know whether you are trying to imply that the pony won unfairly or that it didn't get placed through bad judging. Either way I know which pony you are referring to so I'll wait for your clarification before giving a response.

Dancer - no I wasn't implying bad judging or anything else. I think the pony is stunning, just made me wonder why such a good pony wasn't placed. But as people say different judges different day.

Sorry - I misunderstood your message. Unfortunately I didn't see yesterday's class but I know the pony had a couple of 'near misses' last year so it would seem to just be a difference in judges opinions.

Thats showing for you full of highs and lows. Enjoy the glory on the day you are winning but always be prepared to fall another day. Every Judge has his/her opinions about the ponies/horses before them. It's what keeps us keen to show and makes showing interesting.

if you cant leave a show happy with your animal and with a smile on your face weather you are first and last, then maybe you should question if its worth the heartache and stress ?? We dont mind where we come, and hope that we are placed on merit, we always look for the good in a day, weather its getting a little more rising trot or completeing another very good handy pony course ........ Of course judges opnions will differ... be pretty boring if they didnt !

I agree - We came last today but it didn't matter, the pony completed his show, which he hasn't done in a long time & didn't run away from the judge as she presented the rosette so we seem to be making progress at last

Just seen this thread.
The pony you are referring to is ours. She went very well but just wasn't the judges type on this occasion. She certainly wasn't tired. This was one of our local shows and she always goes well on a surface and a big ring.
She won her ticket at her breed show and finished reserve supreme of the show. (Her first time out since 3 counties) There were other ponies down the line who had also qualified for HOYS. Different judges, different opinions. Thats how it goes. Not a problem, no reflection on the pony, just cross them of the list and look forward to the next show.

Thanks guys, she is only 5 so it's trial and error at the moment with the judges. You pay your money and take your chance!!! some you win, some you lose. We wouldn't swop her anyway, she is the type of sec C that we love - a real pony of cob type and an elevated free mover. We will be so proud to have her at HOYS and Olympia with our prefix and no matter where she comes we love her to bits. Her next show is the RIHS so hope she goes well and behaves herself. She qualified last year as a 4yr old but we were marooned in the floods and unable to go. Hopefully the rain will stop soon

Well what a great attitude to have Deejay and yes best of luck for Hoys and Olympia..However l still find it hard to understand how a pony can do so well one week and be bottom of the line the next week. If the pony is a true example of it's type and shows itself off well then no matter what the judges taste is surely the correctness (in all areas) should override personel preference. I really would find it hard to believe that said judges would be able to consistently put good ponies down because their personel tastes overrode what technically is a very well put together, showy pony. (I am not talking about a specific pony here, just general) Thus it is for this reason that "judges type" is a get out clause, for the competitor. I do have to say l have also used this saying that she is not the judges type, despite one of my own ponies being very well put together and who moves like a real true Welsh Mountain pony should. Just a personal opinion of course, but yes we still try and pick our judges carefully.

Hi hannahlh
The pony is the Welsh Sec C mare Wyken Lady Jasmine. Photo in H&H 2 weeks ago (HOYS Champion R. Cornwall) Have been trying to contact them to get a copy of the pic but no reply so far.
Well I've finished my coffee and am now off to take her for her official measure for the NPS.

Hey Deejay! Should have known I only recognise horses their names...wouldnt recognise people or their names if i fell over them! She is such a beautiful mare, in fact so are all the Wyken ponies, they are all doing so well........well done a credit to you and all the best at both shows..will be rooting for you, you seem like such a nice person so you deserve it p.s Will you be at the Royal Welsh? If so see you there with my C gelding
