Just got my update from Chloe and Warwick went well so really pleased for Aimi - apparantly marks are pretty low, nothing really outstanding. I think Kilmannen Kilty might have top ride marks so far and the C/D's are in now. Apparantly Menai Christopher went well but didn't get brilliant marks - could all hang on the conformation marks which usually does shuffle things around, although A/B's still to go and reckon Sam is in with a great shot with Moelview Prince Consort, I am sure he will go beautifully. ooooh - really open at the moment!!

Congratulations to all. Well done Sam and the very lovely Moelview Prince Consort and so thrilled for Jane and Richard Jones from the Moelview Stud who bred him - I told you he would win!!!!!!! How wonderful for a small, family stud. Also big well done to Morgan Starkie I hear you really deserved it and another incredible achievement for Catherine and Cadlan Valley Sandpiper - 3rd again!! Such a consistent pair. Safe journey home all and well done to everyone.

The photos and updates from Native Pony Magazine on FB were fab, everyone looked fantastic. I'm just curious if we can view full scores anywhere, having seen the ride be nice to see the confirmation.

Some were on Facebook, confirmation very erratic in places! One pony had one score in the 40's and one in the 20's??!!!

Ho weird is that. The only time the scores all added up to 141 was for three section D's one after the other. All with different scores from the judges too. Sorry, just Saw that and thought it was a bit spooky lol.

Think the marks are often like this - just goes to show difference of opinion and also how the conformation marks can shake things up! Often with HOYS qualifiers and 2 judges marks can really vary so with 4 bound to be some differences. Last year we had 2 vastly different ride marks (10 apart!) but 2 top conformation marks and still just missed out on place! The first year of the new system the winner had very average ride marks, well down the line but 2 stonking conformation marks so you never know till the places are announced!

Thank you for posting a link to the marks. Just as a query and talking point and certainly not meant to discredit any one involved in the organisation of the Competition but I am struck by how disproportionately the breeds are represented in these Heritage Finals - in particular the Highlands I was looking at the ponies who have qualified and there does seem to be a very strong contingent in certain breeds ie the Welsh and Connemara, a smattering through the other breeds but only one highland and one Shetland rep. I can understand the Shetland as there are possibly not so many in the ridden classes but not the highlands. Perhaps I am a bit biased but the quantity and quality of this breed being produced is high as we see in the HOYS classes . Why are they not well represented in heritage finals ?I think there were 2 last year but still not a lot considering the quality ponies out there. As far as I could see over the season the qualifiers were well enough filled with quality highlands - some of which went to HOYS. I just wondered if there was any differences between BSPS and NPS judging that reflects this ( and not trying to be derogatory about either - so please take this query in the way it is intended) and what each group look for. I also realise there are not as many places for the Heritage Finals as HOYS but it does seem disproportionate . Any thoughts?

Until judges are asked to explain their reasons for marks things aren't likely to improve! The marks are interesting - the conformation marks maybe give an explanation into the knowledge (or lack of) in respect of some of the breeds. It's unfortunate that this competition no longer seems to attract the best examples of the breeds - maybe this is related to travel costs and the need to travel the country in order to qualify and then to take part in two classes at the end of the year. Olympia has always been a "mixed bag" in terms of numbers qualified but this year there do seem to be a disproportionate number of welsh breeds forwards, also with four judges marking independently the result is always going to be a bit of a lottery. I don't wish to detract from the top few prize winners however it seems this competition now produces an 'averaged' result from the semi-final as well as the final rather than outstanding finalists! Maybe the breed societies should be nominating a pony to represent their breed?!!

One of the issues with the highlands not being well represented is that they are mixed in with the fells/dales similar to the Shetlands when they are in with the dartmoors/exmoors. More often than not they are swamped by the other breeds so if your judge doesn't favour your breed then you are pretty stuffed really, for HOYS they are on a level playing field having their own sections Just an observation whether it be right or wrong

Having bred Ds to ride for over 30 years, Olympia used to be our major target - the M&M HOYS wasn't going for most of the time. My last Olympia Cob was in 2009 which pre-dated the reorganisation and I won't now have another, certainly in my ownership anyway, so I have no axe to grind in these comments. I have watched the rise and rise of HOYS, nothing wrong with that, but once the new complicated system of qualifying for Olympia was introduced, I can totally understand competitors not bothering with it any more. There are far more places available for HOYS, and once qualified, you're qualified, no fiddling about with "semi-finals" somewhere you may not normally have gone.

My daughter's m&m qualified for both Hoys and Olympia last year and this was her first visit to either of these shows ... whilst she enjoyed Hoys, she found competing @ Olympia magical and said it was the best show she had ever been to

Big mama have to agree whichever society is doing it to me there is nothing quite like olympia - going back for the afternoon presentation literally takes your breath away!
With regards to numbers qualifying it has always been the same - you were only ever guaranteed one pony of each breed type and rest could be from any. BSPS increased the numbers forward slightly and aimed to get a higher representation of each breed through with the semi idea, some years it works some years it doesn't, there were three new forests forward this year which is good, two exmoors when you usually only got one. The Welsh c and ds always seem yo get a higher number as they have their own semis and a straight breed as well - i have to say at the champs this year I felt the straight qual were much stronger than the semis

Having been to both as owner but not rider I'd totally agree Olympia is the most exciting, there's nothing like it.
As for numbers per breed - I've always assumed that overall there are more Cs and Ds taking part in the qualifiers in the first place, so statistically there are more likely to be more in the Final. As long as everything is done to ensure there is at least one of each breed I don't see what more can be done, it's down to the competitors' choice of both breed and individual animal within the breed after that.
