Members have voted for this rule in a democratic way and it isn't going to stop producers from competing in these classes, they just have to choose which pony they will ride at the start of the season. So now the boot is on the other foot members have been fed up with the system for years seeing producers take most of the qualifiers, its not a question of who has the best pony but who can pay the most to have it produced! Also judges will now have to judge the pony and not the rider on top ! and yes lets be honest it does happen! I don't have any problem with producers riding in qualifiers after all it is their job, they work hard at it and they do it very well to be so consistant . There is nothing to stop a producer putting another jockey on top for the qualifier and then the same jockey riding in the final if they qualify so I really don't see why some people are making such a fuss. Sour grapes methinks.

There are very many different scenarios involving breeders and producers, it's impossible to generalise for all, and I will just repeat what I said above "Sad to see this wonderful competition reduced from an open to a restricted one".

On the contrary I believe this will open up this competition for all, far from restricting it

I would just like echo the sentiments of previous postings, in saying that the NPS 29 area show was a most enjoyable experience.A well run show at a great venue, with a happy atmosphere & the added bonus of glorious weather ticked all the boxes.

5***** from me as well. We took two workers and came back with 2 seconds. What a fab ring. A proper flowing course with the pond in the RI classes. Not trappy, just asked enough questions. Jack loved it, unfortunately we just missed out on the qualifier.
Just managed to catch the Olympia Championship before we went home. Huge congrats to Matthew and to Carol. It was soooo close!! Well done sarahp and lexy, He is a stunning cob.
A very enjoyable show, great venue, lovely weather (for a change). Well done all concerned at Area 29.

Thanks deejay, he's my pride and joy, definitely the best I've bred.
Well done in the workers, I never found those as just flew up to watch my boy, sat on the bank in the sun and drove home again!

Just looked at the worker pics. He took some good ones of "the pond" jumping into it, going through and out again. Not for the fainthearted!!

seventy8910 - purely as a matter of logic and semantics, an open competition is open to all, but when restrictions are put on who can enter then it changes from an open one to a restricted one. Putting restrictions on cannot make it more open, only less!

I have a question. The lady judge qualified the same jockey on a totally different stamp of highland last year. The highland last year and the highland this year are like chaulk and cheese. Question is then what was she looking for in a highland. Or is it just a case of whats above the saddle.

I would imagine she was looking for an excellent pony of its type, beautifully ridden which went beautifully! I have a feeling Jennie Loriston Clarke would not be swayed by a face!!

Hi Holley, hope you don't mind me asking but how do you feel that the two Highland stallions differ in type? Granted one was bay and one grey, but in my humble opinion I think they are both quite similar in type, but even if they're not, at the end of the day the Olympia qualifiers are for 'ridden' ponies, whilst type is obviously part of the overall picture, they way of going and manners etc play a large part... I think you will find that most people watching on the day would say the the best pony, on the day, won the qualifier... we were there and didn't qualify, but we felt we had a fair crack at the whip and that the pony that went the best, looked stunning and based on the judges opinion should qualify... did!

Putting restrictions on cannot make it more open, only less! Thats just being pedantic. I can only repeat my earlier comments this new rule was voted on and passed by the members in a democratic way ie the majority vote wins. You only have to look at the results this year to see the producers have taken all the qualifiers, good luck to them but it will be refreshing to see some different faces in the ring

If you look back at previous posts from holley there seems to be some sort of an issue with either last years highland ,its owners or its jockey. If there is have the guts to discuss it openly rather than inuendo and well said shelleyj the highland was beautifully ridden and presented.

When you said faces above I assumed you meant human ones not equine, my mistake, but there will be fewer good ponies to choose from with many of the owner/breeders' ones being unable to compete.
Of course the producers are out in force this last year before they are restricted, frequently on owner/breeders' ponies, and while of course I know it was a majority vote (at the third time of trying) I think many who voted have not thought it through sufficiently. Will we now see the same ruling applied to all the NPS Open competitions? I don't expect so, but what is the difference in reasoning?
