www.sunwillowstud.com/ I know we have all seen the photos now but as a breeder I find this short simple statement heartbreaking. quote] How poignant.

I thought the comment from Sunwillow Stud was superb - and lets hope everyone who is still breeding to sell takes note - there but for the grace of god goes any pony we sell.
I had the unfortunate need to be in contact with Redwings during the snow last winter. Our local council were arranging with them to pick up a pony which was in a bad way on our common.... until, of course, they realised it was going to cost nearly £6000 to pick it up - then the Council lost interest.
It is obvious that there would be economies of scale should Redwings go and pick these up - perhaps all those with transport who would be willing to assist could contact Redwings?

Lets be positive guys....Hernani is in the best possible home for her recovery..I am sure Sunwillow take at least some comfort there from that result. I know I would. Move on forward and lets make sure this does not happen again in N Wales. I live there......it is a beautiful place. Anyone any feedback from WPCS e/meeting today?
Modified to add..N Wales or anywhere on the face of this earth

Statement issued by the Welsh Pony and Cob Society in relation to the Sales held on 14th May 2011 The Welsh Pony and Cob Society acknowledges the communication and correspondence received in connection with the sales held on 14th May 2011 and issues this statement in response. The draft sales of Welsh Mountain Ponies and Welsh Cobs on behalf of the Criccieth and Ilston Studs that were held at Builth Wells on Saturday 14th May 2011 were not part of the Society’s Official sale. These sales were Brightwells’ responsibility and were conducted outside the Society’s conditions of sale, as noted clearly both in the catalogue and through the rostrum at the sale itself. Brightwells has issued a statement with regard to the sale of these animals which can be found at www.brightwells.com. At its meeting held today, Council decided that no entries would be allowed to be sold outside the official sale rules of the Society, at the same venue, on the same day, or included in official sales catalogues in future. As a result of Council’s concerns, the whole issue of sales are to be reviewed, to include the standard and condition of animals entered. This will include increased involvement of the Society’s Honorary Welfare Officer and Honorary Veterinary Surgeon. The Society considers the welfare of all equines to be of paramount importance and works hard to educate and support owners and breeders of Welsh Ponies and Cobs in this respect. However, it has to be acknowledged that the Society’s role is educational and advisory, but that the Society itself has no legal powers. The Society’s Welfare Officer is working closely with the relevant authorities in connection with welfare complaints received. At the conclusion of any investigation, the appropriate action will be taken. The Society has always considered welfare as a priority and will continue to work closely with members and non-members to ensure the health and prosperity of all Welsh Ponies, Cobs and horses in general. Council, Welsh Pony and Cob Society 19th May 2011

Dear Wpcs maybe you should ask brightwells to sort their advertising out as I have 3 adverts from 3 seperate H&H's and it most certainly does not state that the Cricieth Sale was seperate...anyway in the scheme of things that is a very minor point.
If thats the case why when a member of council reported concerns to the rest of council previously was no action taken? Why did a fellow council member than tell Mr Evans who this council member was ?
Why when members of the welfare commitee have visited Cricieth stud previously and reported back with their MANY concerns was this quietly filed away and nothing done.
Why did the WPCS not WORK HARD to EDUCATE Cricieth Stud?
Why as YOU HAVE NO LEGAL POWERS did you not, taking into consideration the society's responsibility for the welfare for Welsh Ponies and Cobs not report this issue and the concerns of the society to the Welfare Authorities
Finally Why on earth award an Honourary Life Membership to this awful , awful man.
Wpcs this is not enough it is in fact what a large number of us expected you to say.
We will not go away , this is only the start.

Coed Coch Superstar after spending only 7 weeks at Criccieth on lease. Left in show condition. I cannot believe what I am seeing. For all of us with "fatties" what amount of neglect causes this? Our last 2 harsh winters must have laid a lot of dead stock? 7 WEEKS? ? HOW? ?? One of him the day he left. and at a show 3 days before Reduction sales due to ill health have been going on for 14 years! with lots of breeding and buying in the meantime too.

hmmm Not sure about that.
Bit of buck passing, vague promises, nothing comforting.
Boot up backsides needed, lets wait for the response to Lind D icks letter and it should be soonest.
Thanks everso, I have received a pm about the home for the little mare, she is now in safe hands.

Sorry for my inept pooter skills ...my comment went in the middle. HOW ON EARTH can this happen in 7 weeks? If I didn't feed mine for that length of time they could never look this bad. HOW?

They can loose a lot of weight quite quickly if under stress or are unhappy or covering a large number of mares.....and being very severly deprived of food. Sorry for my inept pooter skills ...my comment went in the middle. HOW ON EARTH can this happen in 7 weeks? If I didn't feed mine for that length of time they could never look this bad. HOW?

Sorry for my inept pooter skills ...my comment went in the middle. HOW ON EARTH can this happen in 7 weeks? If I didn't feed mine for that length of time they could never look this bad. HOW? How indeed! >:(Supe`s was the most chilled out stallion ever and never lost weight when covering or otherwise- sadly we lost him at 33 years of age but right up to the day he died he used to go out with `his girls` , not to cover them as he was more interested in scratching backs with them by that stage but he still had his old harem of favourite old girls who used to keep him company and I have hundreds of photo`s of him out with his ladies at different times of the year, all showing him to be in excellent condition...he just wasn`t a stressy pony, the only reason for him getting in that condition was he was basically starved by this man! If anyone wants to see pic`s of Supe`s at 33 years of age shortly before he died, I will be happy for someone to put them up on here for me...he never quite got that magnificent front of his back, and the dip in his back didn`t repair, but I think i got him looking pretty bloody good again for what he`d been through as I loved him with all of my heart. PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHOTO`S OF SUPE`S ON Action To Stop The Plight of Welsh Ponies as they demonstrate much better the terrible condition my boy was allowed to get in as they are much larger!

Supes - I remember CC SS Star as a youngster when Fred Lynam (Whatstandwell Stud) bought him as as a yearling. My recollection is of him as a roan with a splash under his offside and he moved like a dream!! Sorry - off topic!!

Very well said Linzy.
It has to be said that the combined efforts are having an effect - statements from both Brightwells and WPCS in a matter of days - well done all, keep it up! Has this happened before?
Tell your horsey friends, tell your non-horsey friends, if just one person you tell tells just one more person and so on word will get round and the suffering of these ponies may help to start changing matters.

Hi Ladywell, Yes, off topic but couldn`t go unanswered Sadly Fred (Standwell Stud) died and I was lucky enough to get SUpe`s from his Son, Sam and Yes, Supe`s did have a whiteflash on his offside and also a small circle of white on his neck under his mane on the offside too...and yes, moved like no other pony I`ve seen before or since! Thank you.

Well done Supes, you are brave too. The information you have provided is valuable, get it out there, everywhere, send it by email to all your friends and ask them to send it on. Anyone got a tack shop, up it should go.
I am quite sure WPCS and Brightwells will think these "hysterical" women will go away. I don't think so, we haven't even begun.

Linzy your letters are absolutely spot on. You have put into words what the rest of us are thinking but done it in such a concise and eloquent way that it must be taken seriously. Huge respect to you. Also to everyone else(including me) keep on sending these emails - even if we are not as eloquent as Linzey there is power in numbers and we will not be ignored if we keep on at the "powers that be" Even an irritating rash(us) has to treated eventually as it does not go away!!!!!

This has happened before with a different issue involving a stud and a vet. The WPCS as quick as the case exploded closed ranks and nothing was ever heard after.

I have a very strong feeling this isn't going to happen this time! This has been put into the public domain and there are too many people in the picture to just "forgive and forget". If the media can get a good story out of it(and be fed ad lib information to do so) I reckon the poo is just about to hit the fan and what a wonderful sight it will be!! Keep piling on the poo guys the fan can take it !!!!!!!!!

Good thinking. I suggested a petition y/day but was shouted down for it.............. To be fair I dont think you were shouted down for suggesting a petition I think what upset a lot of people was your comment about a lot of"emotional females heranging the media" which did seem rather patronising when the immediate outcry(of individuals who were emotional and upset) had achieved a result in that a EOGM of the WPCS had been arranged before anyone had a chance to organise a petition! No-one had an objection to the idea of a petition as it had already been mentioned.xx

Can Linzy put something together also regarding tackling this overbreeding issue within the WPCS in general and also something that implements changes within the sales and welfare issues that is set in stone and not said to fob everyone off.

If a petition is put on the goverment website, it will have to be worded in very general terms - I have tried to do this before on another matter, and you cannot be specific about any individual or the petition will not be accepted. You have to submit the petition and then it has to be approved before it will appear on the website, IF they accept it.

KJM I was just about to say more or less the same thing!!! A petition is a good idea but would take time to get signatures, doing things they way we have by bombarding the WPCS and the media with emails is getting results quickly which is what is needed.
