compaints have been made to brightwells but Terry Court said that they were passed fit for auction by the vet.i wonder who the vet is ?? Like Terry Court gives a stuff anyway! If he did he wouldn't need a vet to tell him what condition the ponies were in. I agree with you it would be interesting to know who the vet was and send a copy of this picture to RCVS and ask what there opinion is in this matter(all supposing the vet exists!)

Also, I've just read this post on the WPCS facebook page:
The Welsh Pony and Cob Society New pictures needed for the WPCS Exhibition Unit. Please bring them to the lorry tomorrow at May Sales, Post them to the office or email katie@wpcs.uk.com
Perhaps they would like to use the above picture in their exibition unit?

I think a big scene needs to be made about this in order for anything to be done. The WPCS along with Terry Court and the so called vet are as bad as he is.

Well oddly enough, I just posted the link to the photo of the mare on the WPCS facebook page. And it was removed immediately. Twice.

And this is the WPCS's mission, taken from their info page on FB:
To encourage the breeding and improvement of horses and ponies and, more especially, the Welsh breeds. To advance public education, connected with the use and management of same. To provide or assist in the provision of recreational facilities and uses of Welsh Ponies and Cobs. To prevent cruelty to horses and ponies.

Some really moving posts and people trying to help these ponies. Good luck and please follow through, I shall support where I can.
This isn't to invoke a debate or argument for I want this thread to concentrate on helping ponies in future, but those who go to these sales, please open your eyes and your mind as to whether you are doing the right thing. You should consider whether you are inadvertently supporting these sales by numbers attending and making neglect and cruelty profitable by purchasing cheap rescue cases.
I hope I don't see or hear of such 'bargain' ponies being put back on the market in a few weeks or less for profit or being put in foal, worse still being congratulated for their rescue and bargain buy. Sadly I think I will.

that picture is horrific and i have sent it to one of my friends who was chair of CIPR.
It makes me ashamed to be a member of the WPCS when clearly it isnt doing anything about the welfare of these ponies. I hope Brightwells get as much bad publicity as they deserve for allowing these ponies to be sold.

I have written to Brightwells complaining. I cannot look at the pictures though. Please, if you didn't go or buy, they wouldn't continue.

The thing is though, there are some perfectly reputable people selling at the same places. You just have to not buy any of his.

I think the good vendors who turn out stock in show condition (as do most of us in WPCS) were getting poor prices as well. I personally do not think that these mass reduction/dispersal sales should be tagged in with general sales. It affects ALL the vendors.

What I'm saying is, if you boycott the sales altogether, you are penalising those who are trying to present their ponies properly. What you have to do is boycott the bad sellers who will line their pockets at the expense of the ponies welfare.

But if private buyers don't buy the ponies then they'll probably still be bought by the meat man. I doubt sellers like this care where the money comes from, so either way someone will be lining his pockets. Such a terrible catch 22

I doubt sellers like this care where the money comes from, so either way someone will be lining his pockets. Such a terrible catch 22 I think at the moment people feel sorry for the ponies, and try and outbid the meat man - so he's making more money than if they went for meat. I do think the WPCS and the auction houses need to stop people like this from attending.

It is a very difficult situation. Im in total agreement that if people buy these ponies from studs like Criccieth then the breeder has got a sale and will go ahead and breed more. If not bought by "kind" people then they will be bought by the meat man or if unsold they are returned to the living hell that they came from, in this case Criccieth. I have always been very anti "rescues" because in my opinion ( and its only my opinion !!!! ) an animal is only "rescued" if it is given a home for life and its future is safe. If sold on again it could end up back where it started. I live on Dartmoor and every year there is an outcry because 100's of Dartmoor hill pony foals are slaughtered. These poor animals should never have been bred in the first place but at least if they are culled their suffering is over. Those that do get "rescued" often end up in Exeter market 6 months down the line unhandled and with no real future. Until breeders take responsibility which they won't all the time the breed societies and the likes of Brightwells actively encourage these commercial pony breeders, then the ponies will continue to suffer.

well done Milliesmum, please keep this thread running, unlike other sites who have wimped out. Sunwillow Stud have asked me to post a pic of Hernani in 2005 before they sold her at Fayre Oaks, sadly believing she went to a good home. and again, incase anyone hasnt seen it, how she looked on saturday unfortunately i'm not sure why the pictures have come out so small.

If the "well meaning" didn't buy the mans ponies, he would have no market for them!! Maybe then he would be forced to re-think his policy of "over-breeding"??
Just a thought..............
He still has in excess of 100 ponies at home!!

Wensley its not even recogniseable as the same pony. Maybe Criccieth would like to put the before and after pictures on thier website just so that folk are in no doubt as to how this breeder treats thier ponies......................

Mm is right, it is not the sales that need boycotting, it is the buying of his ponies, how very sad for people to bring their well produced and cred for ponies to sell, and then get less money than his ponies. He should be banned from the sale ring, simple, no market, no reason to breed.

I would like to see a reply from the WPCS too, if this has been going on for years how has it, why has it continued and the sales are a showcase of what is bred in the UK - it is horrific and agree with the statement that he gets more money than well produced cared for ponies that are at the sales - he won't give too hoots if he thinks he can get away with it which he obviously does
was he at the sales? how many people complained as the ponies went through the sale, there should of been an uproar over the state of them

get them to visit the stud and see the poor animal that are housed in sh1te up to there hocks in liquid fillth with corrugated sheeting sticking up all rusty and broken, mares with milk flowing due to foal in these conditions. this man deserves HANGING and he |Knows it. He is one cruel Bar steward. But the best thing ive seen him at beeston sales actually with a dandy brush in his hand trying to groom!!!! a pony....
