I think also that some people might have a HOYS standard pony/horse but just do riding club because they dont want the pressure and only want to enjoy their showing.
Not everybody has a money tree in their back garden either to be able to afford class prices for HOYS qualifiers and county shows and are just quite happily attending their local riding clubs.
Also not everbody is confident enough a rider and stay at riding club level for that reason too.
There can be allsorts of reasons, it doesnt mean to say that their pony isnt as good as people who have qualified and attended HOYS, its just they take a different direction with showing.

Martine, Well done l totally agree with what you are saying 100%..Just to say we do well at county level but often get beat at local Riding Club level, and l have to say sometimes by better ponies on the day. Mind you l don't think there is any pony out there better than mine, l think mine are the best because, it is strange as it is always my own that l want to bring home again lol !! . I think it is good for the younger members to be able to compete against "seasoned campaigners". I would always happily give advice and help to others if asked. However Martine l think it is a bit of a sweeping statement to say "Most Counties and Quals are facey.". I know none of the judges personally and take my chance like all the others. I am just very competitive...........I certainly wouldn't want to be winning if it was bescause l was friendly with the judge, or was showing an animal that l had bought from them etc. I don't think that that would happen as l tend not to mix with them and like to keep myself to myself apart from other friends at shows simple because of this reason. Sorry no disrespect to you, I was asked a question of why i dont up my game and do counties and thats how i replied, glad youve had positive experiences with counties, everyone ive picked the winner looking at the catalogue. especially in the Hunters and Riding Horses and Hacks. maybe its just the local ones to us that this happens at. And its alot to have the money and time off work to travel miles away. Hope i didnt affend you x

I agree with you Martine, just because a person does riding club doesn't mean that their horse/pony is any lower quality than county, and I also know many of the "county" people who have supported their local clubs for years and continue to do it beacuse they enjoy it.Why should they stop just because they have been fortunate enough to qualify for HOYs. In addition with the rising cost of competing we can't all afford to, or want to travel all over the couintry to compete.

eee ... all people have different opions about things like this ... but i also think HOYS pony/horses shouldnt show at riding club championships because i think actual RIDING CLUB ponies should get a chance to win a championship. I just think its unfair and some people are so greedy these days just want it all.

No never felt disrespected ...No offence taken. I know this does happen in the Welshie world at times but l really do think that most judges are straight and judge what they like on the day. I think it is also a fact that judges like certain type and sometimes this is the reason for it seeming that judges are facey or corrupt.
Intrestingly, l use to do Hunters and Riding Horses and Hacks, but that was many years ago..Naivity in those days so never ever thought that anyone could be crooked..even now not sure if they were. I eventually went into Welshies..and now have a great time at most shows weather l win or lose. I just value and treasure every moment as if my last with my ponies, they are the most important thing in my life...

its nothing to do with judging .... its just greedy people out there not giving other people chances who might not have the chance to go to HOYS.

i dont think uk showing can be slated for this happening ,odd as it was , at the end of the day the judges decision is final as they say surely its down to the judge .

uk showing is getting a slatting, its sounds more like peoples opinions on the level of the horse competing. whether it be riding club or HOYS. we all know its what the judge likes at the end of the day. as i know a few judges dont like middleweights in workers. yet the judge on saturday made it very clear that he liked my ride.

My pony has been to HOYS - he wasn't placed there & may never qualify again. We do County level - sometimes successfuly, sometimes not. We do affiliated shows - sometimes successfully, sometimes not. We do local level - sometimes successfully, sometimes not. So, what level would you all suggest we show at? Just because a pony has qualified at for HOYS doesn't mean that there aren't better ponies out there.

Many people who show at a high level are also supporters and regular attendees at events organised by their local RC

Well my view is, as long as you don't have a strop if you don't win, then go where you like and do what you and your pony enjoy. If you're polite and courteous, and not breaking any rules, then it's really no-one elses business what you do.

HOYS is one show! what do this HOYS ponies/ do for the rest of the season?
I have never seen proper owners having a strop only people who have bought a made pony that doesnt say made for long! one of those " do you know where my pony won? (not with us)"

Right i think that if your horse has been to HOYS and now gone to Riding club doesnt that show something. That the horse obviously isnt HOYS standerd and can only do riding club so they obviously thought they bought an all singing all dancing pony which they havnt! I don't think it's fair to say that HOYS ponies now at RC aren't HOYS standard neither are RC ponies necessarily below HOYS standard - it all depends what level owners want to compete at. No pony is 'all singing, all dancing' & a lot will also depend on the experience/ability of the jockey - the pony doesn't do it all on their own.

What have you ever done/won? You obviously know naff all as my cousin got her pony to hoys in 2006 missed out by 1 mark last year and qualified it this year so OBVIOUSLY the pony is all singing all dancing!!!

I went to UK Showings very FIRST Championship show, when they only had the one day supreme. You had some good homeproduced names there that qualified RIHS and HOYS. I took supreme and it was such an achievment as the quality there was amazing for like you say an unaffliated show. But it's the fact it is such a fun show and the likes of PUK and BSPS.. you have to get past those producers to even win. I attended UK Showing 2005 & 06 and yet again different and same good names attended the show aswell. I remember saying to my mum in 2004, this will be the new PUK Championships. At PUK you have people who are only new into the showing and you can tell. But that doesn't mean we have to step down our game. I'd be pleased to stand behind a beautiful pony that behaved etc. Gives those unaffliated people to go wow we stood behind that or wow we beat that! I'll be doing UK Showing next year, i really have missed going. It will be a nice change, from chasing these HOYS qualifiers !

Whilst i totally understand many points of view on this thread i feel it is similar to that of the pot hunting thread! I personally don't see the problem with allowing hoys ponies to riding club level shows. if there is bad feeling about this i am confused as it is considered by me to be much more prestigious to be second to a hoys pony that a lesser quality pony!!! basically by saying that hoys ponies shouldn't go to riding club are you admitting that you are not good enough to beat them? if this is not the case then why the problem? hoys ponies and jockeys of the very highest calibre can make mistakes and so if the riding club people can up their game there's no reason why you can't be hot on their heals when they do make a mistake. IMO to make a top class riding club fair but competitive competition should be encouraged and the riding clubs should not be allowed to sit back and say 'we don't want hoys ponies at our club cos they always beat us ' Don't be a defeatest and give them a run for their money!!! Martine, tatally agree about the hunters although i have done quite well considering i am classes as a no body and whilst it is most of the time facey and fixed sometimes it isn't and all it takes is one big win!!! I'm not wanting to offend anyone just put my opinion across!!!!

I think it's fantastic to have HOYS/RIHS qualified ponies at championships like these, i think it makes the riding club people and ponies try harder and up their game (i'm a riding club person), plus when you beat one of these ponies it's such an amazing achievement, it's healthy competition for all xx
