My day was all ticks as well for a change, had the best lunch ever, my two first time stewards picked it up like good'uns and did a super job, the little kiddies lead reins did a sterling job with their 'up-downs' bless them, and the weather was splendid. I'd be back next week if they wanted me!! AND!!!!!! I got paid £80 for the day - could'nt believe it!!

Well they must have all heard I was a stickler for protocol, all in jackets, no complaints - apart from a few adult riddens who thought it was a good idea to have a stab at the inhand later in the day and realised they had to run ALL the way round the ring (shame). To be honest, I had a summery outfit on, and was still sweating like a pig, took my linen shirt off when the ring was empty and no-one could see the rather ugly and faded tattoo on my back but it went on as soon as they entered the ring. Avoided the sunburn except on a small area of my upper chest which is beetroot red and still throbbing now. A big hat is the absolute godsend on those sort of days!! We need danger money having to stand out all day in that heat, you dont have the option of going home coz its too hot, you have to stick it out as a judge. The heat must have got to me at some point though, as today I realised I asked the steward to ask for a change of rein in the wrong corner, luckily the first one across the diagonal was more switched on than me and we achieved it without any mishaps.

Glad you all had a good day - think our judge 'lost' it in the afternoon as he forgot to ask for canter on one rein, must have been the sun!

as someone that shows week in week out you get asked to judge all manner of shows from rihs to one day agg shows and even more local, local shows these are the ones i try and avoid at all costs, one horse wonders turn up with there pride and joy doing the worst job they can not wanting your well ment help and experiace thinking they know all when they cant even turn there slaughter house reject the rite way, you grt a bad burger from the greesey spoon if your lucky not for me thank you at least at the slightly bigger shows you get some stalls to look at and a WI lunch!

i vary my charges depending on how many are in, i dont drive so rely on other half to drop me off, but think if your not getting a decent rate of milage ( 35p is what we generally pay for out DC Judges) then a small fee for local and unaffliated shows is the right way, £80 is an amazing amount, most i have ever accepted in a day was from a club and i judge all day in very large classes and 50miles each way, was 40 pounds, if i go to a show and they have very low entries i sometimes wont bother, if someone on their team who can help me out at any of my shows, i dont take anything, and if a charity event no matter how skint i am i dont take anything, or if they isnsit they will get it back some other way by raffle or slipped in the collection tub

Shelley l also have a slaughterhouse reject who may not be the greatest pony in the world but, when shown has never come out of the first three except on one ocassion can't be bad. However the showing is just a small part of his life the rest of the time he works hard at being my best friend and greatest companion..so whatever you may think Peegy38 you can also be wrong..
Have to say this Peggy38 sounds like you should be giving up the horsey scene as you are obviously so disillusioned by it all....................
How dare you even call yourself a judge with an attitude that is only fit for the dustbin..Come on let me know who you are then l will ensure l never show under you and will make sure that other shows are made aware of you, and you filthy attitude. You are a disgrace to the scene and l really hope your fellow judges suss who you are and ensure you are never allowed to judge again.

what a truly horrid thing to say, what a b****y pompous and arrogant attitude, we used to do local shows before the kids and ponies improved, and saw a lot of people with ordinary ponies, who were not evergoing to the big shows for one reason or another, but they enjoyed their "one horse wonders" and their show which might have been the only one they were able to do, christ i hope never to show under you, that attitude has left a very bitter taste in my mouth, you are all that is bad in showing, sorry about that but that has really got to me

Having read 'peggy38's' other comments on this site she (?) does seem to think she is above others & doesn't appear to have a nice word to say about anything - although it seems she will be attending Fayre Oaks High Flyer sale for anyone that may like to put a face to the 'username'!!!!!!!

Peggy38, sorry but it's people like you that give the rest of us judges a bad name. I suppose you are one of those who bark on about rude competitors and bad ring manners. I suggest that you take a good look at your comments before you 'moan' about anyone.
I also judge at every type of show, but would never dream of being so personal or abusive about the people who pay their hard earnt money to compete before me. Everyone has the right to show, no matter what level they are at. You are NOT there to be so insulting towards them.
So what if they haven't got the next HOYS winner, they are probably having more fun at a local show than the rest of us do from competing at HOYS. If you are really so bombastic in your feelings towards anything other than RIHS then why the hell agree to judge at them? Nobody is forcing you to judge. You have been asked (although god knows why!) and you have accepted. Dont then go moaning about the people, animals, and the lack of silver service.

I never see it as a chore, it is a sheer pleasure, even when its chucking it down and blowing a gale and people have made the effort to come forward and be judged. I never forget I started off this way, and was lucky enough to have nicer ponies and was able to move onto the county circuit as time went on, and the direction of knowledgable people to help me do so. Not everyone is that fortunate, and although I see some totally unsuitable animals and a lot of struggling kids (and sometimes adults) I just think there for the grace of God go I!! If I ever started to think like you Peggy38, I'd jack the whole thing in. There is always the odd smart-Alec, but most of them are genuinely trying their best, and love their animals dearly, and will ask for advice as they can see they are in need of it. I am glad to be able to put something back for all the years of fun I had as a youngster at this very local level.

All I can say is thank god for one horse wonders they gave me a enjoyable days judging welcoming any advice that I could give them. I 'm just surprised that from you lofty position you could actually see the ponies that you are asked to judge, one thing you should remember is that these so called one horse wonders are the backbone of the showing community and without them there would be NO showing and the little boy/girl with their meat house reject could be the next top professional, everyone has to learn their trade somewhere. So peggy38 you stick to what you know and let the rest of us have bloody good time doing what we enjoy. Also from reading some of your other posts and as you are so much better than the rest of us plebs I would of thought that your spelling and grammar would at least been correct.

Peggy38.... While you are sitting on your very ownsome enjoying your WI lunch, it might be an idea to contemplate on what you have said on this site, as a judge, and expect respect from people who have paid good money for entry fees deisel, and taken the time and patience to scrub their "slaughter house rejects" clean and show them to their best ability. Contemplate this.... being man-handled onto a dirty, stinking lorry, emaciated, lice ridden, starving, thirsty, unwanted and unloved. The smell of death in your nostrils, the fear of God in your heart. Walked into a blood soaked abatoir with a man in a dirty apron and a gun. We rescued a new forest foal from the slaughter house, who had just witnessed his mother being shot infront of him. We got there in the nick of time, hand reared him, and had years and years of joy and pleasure from this special little pony. He owed us nothing. How dare you refer to these people who have saved their "one horse wonder" in such an arrogant, condescending manner. You, my dear, are from the ilk that give judges a bad name. Overbent you are so right. I am very offended by Peggy38's comments. My 'Slaughter house reject' is not only the love of my life and the best pony ever...wouldn't change the world for him, but also won the ridden championship at a NPS show a couple of weeks ago, and many many more befor that in the 11years it has been since i rescued him from that awful place as a, scruffy, wormy, thin 7mnth old colt...but was also only 8 marks away from qualifying HOYs last week....i dont care if he didnt qualify that was d**n close enough for me and i couldnt be prouder of him. As for you slating all the other so called one horse wonders with their pride and joys...well as you say they are THEIR pride and joys and i dont think they give two hoots about what you think, they are loved family pets at a local show just trying to have some fun!!!!
