Thats bad, iv had a couple on loan always treated them as if they were mine and given them back when asked for, iv successfuly loaned as well. Could you report them?? Not sure what you would do, send them your vet bill? Presume you had a legal loan agreement, so if they have broken it take legal action.......or count your lucky stars you have got your horse back. You do hear some horror stories.

God dont get me started on this. We had a top class lead rein and put her out on loan. she was going back to the yard we got her from to what i thought a very nice family. did all the usual things checks refs etc. lease agreement signed and our beloved pony went. the sat before she went she was supreme champ, so was in tip top show condition. 4mths later i got a call saying that i had to fetch her back. as the pony was a saint was a little bemused by this request. explained that i hadn't got a spare stable and was told that if i didnt fetch her she would go in a field! a friend, who lived near, went over to see what the problem was. an hour after speaking to my friend i got a cal from her saying she was going to fetch her lorry and would ring me later. eventually got call and my firend said she would keep her for a while as she wasnt fit to travel back down to me! i was then horrified with what else i heard. she had been in a cow shed that had no ventilation or light s**t everywhere, shoes hanging off, and massive fat lumps on her neck and arse. a month later i went to fetch her, and just cried when i saw her. my beautifull shp was a coughing obese mess. had vet and between us decided the best way would be to bring her slowly back into some sort of work. after 2 days of gentle walking both front tendons came up. immediately took her for a scan. the vet aged the injury, and told me that the injury was approx 3mths old! it later turns out they jumped her (which in the agreement there was a condition that they could not jump her) and she pulled both tendons and they didnt get a vet out. instead they turned her into a field full of ragwort. got tendon sorted then she came down with toxic lami, due to the ragwort. she then went into total organ failure. 11 mths after our pony had left us i was taking her over to our vets to be put to sleep. NEVER again would i ever put any of our ponies out on loan. no matter what checks you do you cant be 100% certain they will be looked after properly. I feel so guilty that in doing something i thought would be good for our pony turned out to have actually killed her.

Never again would loan out , we loaned a pony with a view to buy, to what seemed the ideal home, we had proper loan agreement advised by the BHS,The agreement stated a deposit then 4 installments to be completed by the end of the year, at which point they had the passport, OK initial deposit was 500 only 150 arrived made call, told they had spent money on new tack, rugs etc went to visit pony, who was well cared for and had best of ever thing , to cu t a very long story short, we only received 3 payments, that were never the agreed amount then they dropped the bombshell, son doesn't want to ride her anymore, so could we take her back, and give them their money back, rang and calmly told them that we had been very fair with them that they had used pony all summer now winter approaching, and the end of the loan it didn't seem fair pointed out that they would be better, finishing of paying for her and then they could sell her on in their own time , they agreed to this , left us on edge this was not fair on the pony, another month passed and another call to say they wanted to send her back, , OK by this time was getting annoyed, rang cousin who had space for her and checked out what we could do legally, then rang back to say was fetching pony now, OK they said but WE can sell her first and give you the money, NO WE ARE COMING NOW, turned up at another yard walked pony out of box thought please just walk on lorry which she did, cousin put back up said would call her later to discuss things and drove of , it was a bit like cattle rustling, then she called every day for the return of her money, even rang a mutual friend who pointed out the agreement and that she had broken the terms, and thought it wise she left it alone, but know continued to ring daughter up in middle of lessons at uni, this is when Hushed got involved, told her straight..... pony now settled with cousin, so if your pony isn't being cared for and you have the passport, you have the right to collect it at anytime, it is your responsibility, don't leave it to late...... rant over

Yes took it further but it went pear shaped because the witness, who had seen her on ragwort field and being jumped, wouldn't give a statement. The hardest part was the effect on my daughter. She was totally devastated. I have seen these scumbags twice since, at shows, and both times they have run in opposite direction gone back to lorry and left.

Similar thing happened to us, my son had a 14.2 showjumper, we bought her as a 14yr old found out later she was 22, so we retired her,she wasnt happy doing nothing and the aff courses were to much for her so gave her to some so called freinds as a hack and occasional local show , we went to the august bicton meet 2 years later and my freind said theres you pony, and sure enough there she was with a different rider, to cut a long story short it was her and they had bought her as a 12yr old jumping machine!!!! luckily for her they were lovely people and promised she would never be asked to jump higher than bn and would have a home for life, 2 years later they rang to tell us she had been pts at home she was one of the lucky ones

I must have done a good job because they have given me a free show pony a 13hh 2yr old. There are honest people out there!!!

Hi - read these awful stories, but please don't tar us all with the same brush..... I have had some fantastic ponies on loan, from fantastic owners. Anything that comes to us is treat the same, be they ours or someone else's - in fact I would probably call the vet quicker on someone else's than on my own!

Dont get me wrong, there are some lovely people out there who do look after them. We have had various ones on loan and gone ott with their care. I would never dream of giving anything but 5* treatment to them. Just after everything we went thro with ours i am against anything else ever going out on loan.

ive had good and bad dealings with loans. One thing i have learned is when they go back, i have them vet checked/worm counted/thorough photos as someone did try to stitch me up. on the other side, i have a pony on loan from someone on here, whom has since sent me further ponies as summer liveries!

you can take legal action- it happened to us but we didn't get anything because it didn't say much about neglect in the contract, only that they had to pay vet bills- which they agreed to in the end, also as the pony was stabled less than so many miles away from us, something- about that, can't remember though coz my mum dealt with it

not an awful lot really unless you have the money to take the whole thing to court which is a total waste of time should the other party not have any disposable income to pay any compensation......
Just be thankful that you have the horse back and check out any future loanees fully, getting references before letting the horse go! Also be prepared to make regular unnanounced visits to check the welfare of your horse!

I feel that these bad few that give us loanies a bad name dont give two hoots about animal welfare and would be as bad if they bought insted of loaned. Im sure we all have horror stories of bad sales? They obviously dont give a c**p about horses.

I loaned a Irish draught stallion out a few years ago to what seemed a lovely couple. very good references, lovely yard ect. everything was fine for the first twelve months, they asked for a loan for the following season to which i agreed, and boy did i do wrong. They moved areas Norfolk never kept ion touch, eventually we went down to see him, he was like a old knacker hed lost all his toplione, had his ribs and hip bones sticking out, feet never trimmed, thrush, worms filthy OCD, wrotten hay being fed to him , hardly anybed, and what there was was disgusting, my beautiful horse completely neglected. the excuse was they had no money.... well ring and tell me and send him back dont starve him to death. needless to say we didsort it out. But not everyone is like them so please dont tar everyone with the same brush.....

Mmm been away for a while so rather a belated response to this one! we have had a pony loaned out (as a favour) - yes looked after like their own yes - however despite original advice on pony and way of going has come back with 'no mouth'! and going like a totally different breed - and still feel as though the pony is now on loan to me rather than being the owner!! - now having to take an older pony previously open standard back to basics! v.sad

We didn't enjoy having a connie on loan as she wasn't ours I became quite paranoic about her, the worry stopped us enjoying her in case she threw a splint or got kicked so we kept her through the winter and sent her back in the spring.

That is a worry with a show animal i witter over my loanie sp, wont do things i would do with mine like hack on my own, i worry that im not doing enough regarding shows ie not doing HOYS/RIHS classes so shes going back next month, the owners have been no bother though.

Rightt I did start a thread but its been deleted or sommit but ohh well its conected to this thread. Well My aunty did have her pony out on loan and the people who had him decided to give it to ********* to produce. We then went to BSPS champs and saw him.[the pony] He had only been there for 5 months and to be honest how thin can a pony get in that amount of time well you wudnt beleive how sickly thin it was to look at a pony which was once bright and healthy! my auntie had to walk away before she cryed. and they thought it was accectable to bring it to a show in that condition! we then sed we wanted him back and asked what the excuse was to let this animal get in to this condition, there excuse was that he was just tucked up because of being round mares! when he came from a STUD farm! im sorry but this man is a cruel person and shudnt be aloud near ponies!
